Default Help me with a Herrett's order

I am going to be making a Herrett's order soon.

One of the guns I want to order for is a 4" Model 29. I took the cokes off and stored them because they are a little on the big side for me. I replaced them with hogue rubber grips but I hate the finger grooves.

The folks at Herrett's recommended the Jordan Trooper. I worry that this may still be a little on the big side for me. I don't have small hands, but K and N frame target grips always seem to big for me. Does anyone know how the Jordan Troopers compare to N frame targets? Same size or different?

I have Ropers on my K frames and I love them. But I am sort of at a loss as to what to put on the 29. I want something smaller and more manageable than the N frame targets and without finger grooves.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have Jordan Troopers on all my revolvers. They make them to fit your hand size and can make them with an open backstrap. I think they (Herretts) have quite a backlog right now. 14-15 weeks?

I'm not sure what the difference is between a set of Jordan Troopers with an open backstrap and Herrett Ropers. In fact, I've always assumed that to be Jordan Troopers, the grips had to cover the backstrap. Could be wrong. I have Herrett Ropers on two of my N-frames, and they fit my small hands well. I had to send them back to get an extra 1/4" cut off the butt, since they originally left way too much wood under the butt, but that may be because I pressed too hard on the paper when I did my hand drawing. I've never been able to get a set of Troopers to fit my hands, and was discouraged by the folks at Herrett's when I mentioned them, considering my hand size. I had the privilege of shaking Bill Jordan's hand once, in 1972, and actually holding a Model 19 that wore Jordan Troopers, made for his hands. His hands were huge, so it's no wonder the design worked so well for him.

I have used Herrett's Jordan Troopers on all my magnum S&W's for over 35 years, and they are an excellent choice. It isn't so much the size of the Jordan grips, but the shape that makes them so good. If you order the grips custom made to your own hand, there should be no problem with fit.

Let me suggest that when you provide the hand size trace for Herrett's that you also send along a good zerox copy of your hand as well. Do compare it to your hand to be sure the machine didn't change the size a bit. If the grips come out too large they can always remove some wood.
I've had Herrett's on my revolvers for a good number of years.

I have Jordan Troopers on my 25-5 and love them. The factory targets feel big and clunky to me. My Jordans feel slimmer to me and the gun points naturally with them. Here are some dimensions to compare with your targets if it helps. They were measured on the gun.

Thickness
at bottom: 1.210-1.220
3/4" from bottom : 1.300
at top ( where it curves to fill in behind the triggerguard) 1.265

Front to back dim.
at bottom : 2.185
at top ( where it curves to fill in behind the triggerguard) 1.857

Hope this helps

Jordan grips really cut recoil effects and muzzle rise with a friend's M-29.

I handled several of Bill's guns many years ago, and was surprised to find that I could use them quite well. I'm nowhere nearly as large a man as he was.

If you happen to have a highly fgured block of wood you would like your stock made from it should be at least 2x3x6, maybe a bit larger.
I used to have a good friend that would send me cut offs from rifle stock blanks he had cut. I ended up with some really nice looking Herrett's from all that wood.

I had a couple of these made by Dee and they were always too large for me. If I ever do it again I think I'll send in a trace of my 10 year old daughter's hand.

The last ones I bought from them were what I believe is called the Shooting Master. It is similar to the Jordan Trooper except that it is symmetrical. I do a lot of left hand shooting too and prefer stocks that are the same on both sides. These are also a bit large but that's OK on a shortened Redhawk.

I guess this is probably a Shooting Master but I only ordered a Jordan Trooper open to show the laser markings on the right side. It worked out well since I'm a leftie.

Redhawks are hard to stock, they have a large frame so the stock ends up being really BIG. (this was the first stock made for me by Herrett's)

If your stock is too large, call and have them reduce them a bit, it's better than shooting ones that don't fit.
