I'm looking at purchasing a 639 but the rear sight seems to be off center. By the looks of it the sight leaf is nearly centered and its the assembly that needs relocated. While its probably fine to shoot, it annoys me.

How are these sights held on? will it simply be a matter of milling the holes one way some, or is there more to it then that.

While we're at it, whats a good price for a fine lookin 639?

The sight base is not adjustable as it is screwed into the slide. It appears that someone has adjusted the sight blade all the way to the left. I wonder if the gun shot extremely to the right or was it a lefty with a bad flinch. I would just adjust the blade back to center and see what happens.

If that gun was here in California I expect to see $400 plus on the price tag. And only if the shop was being generous. I would expect $325 to still be a fair price. That is what I paid for mine in 1986.

Be sure to check the frame where the recoil lugs are for peening. Also make sure the frame is straight along the rails. Those are two areas that have suffered from hot loads in mine.

BTW it stills works just fine and is a great gun.

They're askin 400 to the door. It looks almost new, and does have three day inspection period. Have'nt made my mind up yet....

The 639 is a lot of gun for the money. It is extremely dependable but heavy. The only part I ever have replaced was the ejector which is a fairly simple DIY job. I also wish I had replaced the recoil spring sooner to cut down on battering the frame. I'll admit to abusing mine with hot reloads. The frame stainless seems rather soft on mine. On the other had it has never cracked under stress and I still shoot it.

Considering the last two 9MM I purchased cost a whole lot more than the 639 it is still a great deal.

If your hands are medium size the single stack is the way to go. It does have the mag disconnect and the DA pull is long but the SA mode is short and crisp on mine.

Remember to lube it well if you purchase the gun.

They actually have the same sight blade as a revolver, you screw it back and forth through the hole in the side of the guard. Without shooting it first you would have no idea where it's going. Some new shooters want to chase their holes around with their sights, and it's hard to tell where they end up. You might want to see if they'll throw in some extra mags, the 39/3900 mags are harder to come by right now. I would be sure to replace the recoil spring when I got it, then every 4-5000rds.
