Question Removing Paint from Rear Sight

I recently picked up an otherwise nice 66-5, R/R, W/O. However, it would appear that someone painted the entire rear sight assembly, from the hammer to the top of the sight leaf, including the adjusting screw, with thick, white house paint. I have tried alcohol, SoftScrub, and GoJo Orange, all with no result. I am hesitant to use a stiff wire brush for fear of removing the finish from the blue/black sight assembly, much less the white outline on the sight blade if it is indeed under there. Anyone have any ideas or advice? Thanks. -Ed.

Acetone, but I think it will remove the white outline too. From your description that's most likely not saveable.

For housepaint, probably mineral spirits. For anything else, acetone or
ketone (MEK). You can't save the white outline at this point.

MEK, Acetone and an old toothbrush. Be sure to flood the sight blade with a few drops of oil and blow off the excess when done as removing the paint will remove all oil from the sight too.

A 66-5 is late enough that the factory white-outline is only painted on to begin with. Even normal cleaning often wipes the white outline off these. Once the blade was painted there isn't any white-outline to save anymore.

What everyone's already said. If you decide to re-do the white outline, I'd suggest Rust-oleum #203000 Appliance Touch-Up. It's far more resistant to solvents, than any paint other than Imron. I've used it for years on 3 dot sight jobs. Any big box home improvement/hardware or appliance store will carry it, or an equivalent.
