There is some damage to the rear sight elevation screw on my S&W 66, and I would like to replace it. It looks like the screw is held in place by a small circular metal ring. Can I replace this screw myself, or should I replace the complete rear sight assembly? Thank you.
You can replace the screw yourself if you're handy with tools and and working with tiny parts.
I'd order a new screw and a new "C" clip so if/when you loose the clip during installation, you'll have a new one handy.
Once the sight is off the frame, use a DULL X-Acto knife to gently pry the "C" clip off the screw. Keep your thumb over the end of the screw to prevent loosing the clip.
To re-install the clip, fit it over the tapered end of the screw and use a small metal tube or a pair of small needle-nose pliers to press the clip onto the screw.
The recommendation to "Not Lose" the C clip is a good one, it is "tiny" and I used a very small needle nose pliers to grab it once the dull exacto blade pry's it away from the screw. I felt like an extra pair of hands would have been helpful. I mounted the sight in my Fly Tying vice to free up holding the sight and the exacto blade and the pliers all at thee same time. Be patient you can do it.
