Hi.

I bought a 629-4 Classic 6.5" from a coworker who bought it new and had a scope put on the gun.

I tried to get used to the scope, but I just can't get comfortable with it and need to put the original rear sight assem. back on. Thing is, the original owner doesn't have the sight parts the shop took off to mount the scope.

I need the complete sight assem. and screws to mount it.

Where should I get the parts? Through S&W, or Brownells, Midway etc.?

Anyone here know what the part #'s I'll need would be? I'd like to put original S&W parts back on. The front sight is the spring loaded red ramp and that is still mounted on the barrel. I don't have a manual for this gun, and the parts list on the S&W site says to "see chart" and I'm not sure where that is.

I sure will welcome any help on this.

Not to second guess 500 Magnum Nut but the last time I replaced the rear blade on a 6 1/2" Smith .44 magnum, the factory told me it was a .146" blade, not a .126" so you might want to triple check before ordering.

The parts book lists it as a 629-4 classic with a 6 1/2 barrel.

The other guns have different blade heights.

It should be correct as when new. If if turns out to be the wrong height, then you will have to replace the blade. It's a cheap and easy thing to do.

I just went the same route with a 686-4. The previous owner had mounted a scope, lost the rear sight, etc. I ordered my parts from Smith which I installed relatively easily. But I have one annoying problem---the rear end of the sight isn't sitting horizontal. It is tipped slightly clockwise.

Prior to installing the sight, I placed the blade in the track in the frame and moved it back and forth. It appeared to move easily and left light rub marks in the bottom of the track. That suggests the blade should have bottomed completely when I tightened the front screw. I even gave the blade a rap using a hard wooden dowl as a drift to make sure it was seated. No change.

I've been doing my own gunsmithing for over 40 years, and solved a lot of problems. But this one has me stumped. Unless the sight track wasn't machined square with the sides of the frame, I'm at a loss why the sight isn't sitting horizontal.

Has anyone else run into this problem and found a solution?

If no burrs on the top (around the threaded hole), look underneath where the square nut fits. Perhaps the underside has a burr. When tightened the spring tension of the sight leaf is causing it to twist slightly.

Another idea is to remove the leaf from the gun and swap it with another, just to prove it's not the leaf. I never seen a bad one but anything is possible.

Using a small bubble level, I was able to determine that the leaf might be twisted. The leaf is close to level at the mounting screw while the end at the elevation adjusting screw is more tipped. (I did deburr the thread holes which needed it after removing the scope mount.)

I could try unscrewing the elevation screw from the square nut, turning the nut 90 or 180 and then tighten the elevation again to see if the nut was the problem. I'd check for a burr in the slot at the same time.

If the blade is twisted, do you think it would be OK to unscrew the elevation screw from the nut, and twist the blade until the sight end is horizontal? I'm concerned maybe the mounting screw can't take that much force.

If the blade is what is twisted, remove the blade and place it in a padded vise. Lightly bend it in a vise using an adjustable wrench to correct the twist. Put a rag around the wrench so you don't scar up the rear leaf as you apply twisting pressure.
I think it should bend easily (like a main spring).

Don't tighten the screw (attached to the gun) as this won't straighten the blade out.

Got the parts you listed from S&W (all good numbers) New style rear sight and screw. Parts got here fast, installed in no time at all, got to the range as quick as I could to "dial" her in.

Tack Driver. I can shoot this better with the irons better than I did with the scope.

I have my father's 629-4 Classic, and he had a scope on it, rear sight is missing. I can't exactly ask him anymore since he passed away (thus why I have the .44). I want to get the hard rear sights, and I looked at the ones at Brownells and called them up to verify, and the guy on the phone said there is a new and an old style, and he can't get the old style anymore. Now, I can't remember what he said about how to tell, but it was something about the front of the rear sight guide being rounded vs square. Can anybody verify this? Also, is there a way to tell by serial number?

"New style" has a round front, as pictured in post #2. The recess cut in the frame for the sight assy is round at the front to match. There will also be three tapped holes in the top strap. Good chance that's how your scope mount is attached.

"Old style" is square. Top strap recess runs out straight at the front. One tapped hole in the top strap.
