I recently purchased a M38 from 1968-1969. I absolutely love it. I got it at a really good price because the orignal owner had "upgraded" the cylinder release, trigger and hammer with gold ones. This pistol lives in my pocket so its not real important except the hammer being bright distracts because it contrast with the blued finish. I am about to order from S&W blued parts to replace. Is there anything I should know or avoid or also get. I have thought of getting a wolf spring kit just due to the age of the revolver. I dont think its been shot alot I just figure they are 30+ years old. What are your thoughts.
Send it back to S&W and let them spruce it up for you. I understand that they do a bang up job and will replace any worn parts if you ask them to go through the whole gun.
I would do that if it were just for a check up. I figure parts will run me 120 ish if I do it myself a little more if I replace springs. I figure if I do springs ill probably do wolf. I just wonder if I should replace the springs. It really hasn't been shot much. I've got confidence in it and its smooth and at the point a very good deal.
If you have put a few hundred rounds through it and it is reliable, springs are not a problem. Since the hammer is shrouded, get some black, indelible marker pens and simply color the part you see or what bugs you. Some of these pens really don't stay on but some are really good. Experiment.
This is one of the best pocket revolvers and concealed means concealed, so a golden colored hammer would not bother me..lol!
