Default Black Rubber Grip Repair

A friend recently gave me an older Smith to clean up.When I removed the grip panels I noticed they were numbered to the gun and outwardly were in great shape.Inside ,one of the panels has a long crack that begins at the hole for the frame pin and extends half way up the panel. What is the best material to repair this that will not damage the black rubber but will stop the crack from getting worse?

A tube of "Shoe Goo" might do it.

What is Shoe Goo?
Shoe Goo is a rubbery adhesive and sealant that comes out of a tube just like jelly. Shoe Goo is not a trademarked product and several different manufacturers make and market it under Shoe Goo and similar names. It also works as a waterproof sealant and comes in two colors: clear and black. You can typically find Shoe Goo at shoe stores, shoe repair shops, Ebay, Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target.

What Can it be Used For?
Shoe Goo is perfect for repairing several different types of shoe problems. It repairs splitting, when the rubber sole detaches from the base of the shoe and flaps. Its also great on tears were it can act as a waterproof sealant. Finally, its most famous for rebuilding the soles of shoes that wear out.

Getting Started
Before sitting down to use Shoe Goo to fix your shoes I recommend gathering the following items: A rag, sand paper or a nail filer, an ice cube, and a tooth pick. Just like any adhesive, shoegoo vapors are harmful and should be applied outside. Also, be sure to read the safety instructions on the tube.

Are you a salesman for Shoe Goo? If not you should consider trying to sell it!!! I asked the wife and she dug out a new package containing of all things some Shoe Goo !!Go figure!
I was also looking for something to repair some shoes and this seems to be just the thing!I even checked the stuff out on the net and found out what the ice cube was for. When I first saw your post and the mention of an ice cube I thought,"this don't sound right" but what do I know about Shoe Goo??? Got any Grip Goo ??

There is material called Plastex that I have used on all types of hard plastics/rubber compounds. It was recommended to me to repair an air box for a ATV instead of paying a huge chunk of change for a new one.
It worked.
It is basically powder that you pour into the crack then pour on a liquid. It will harden in 20 minutes.
If you used it be sure and wipe the edges to be put together with a Q-tip and nail polish remover (acetone). It will remove any grease and "soften" the material for a better bond.
