Default S&W Model 639 Slide Crack

Any experience out there with a frame crack on a 639 frame at the point where the extractor cut and the frame cut meet? I have a hunch that the 3/4" crack is not a problem, but thought I'd write here before shooting. I also put a WTB in for a frame for this...39, 439, 639??? I want a weather proof carry gun. I live in WA state. Thanks all!

Your description of the location of the crack leaves something to be desired. A 3/4 inch crack is something to be concerned about. Check with the factory about the availability of new frames. Used to be they'd stamp your serial number on a new frame and ship the gun back.

If this is a recent purchase, I'd take it back where you got it and scream bloody murder.

Do you have a cracked frame or a cracked slide?

...small, thin crack where the extractor groove meets the frame rail groove inside the slide.

I have a well used 639 which has the same issue as yours. What you see is not a crack. It is where the metal was milled away for the extractor and the slide cut. These two cuts meet in this area.exposing the void behind the extractor. Mine has been this way since new and has been used with thousands of loads. Unless an actual crack forms along and beyond the extractor pin this is not a problem. Blast away and enjoy your pistol.

Bruce

BTW There may be a small thin flash of metal still present from the machining. You can safely remove this with a knife or a pick. The metal should be solid from about 3/8'' from the extractor pin forward.
