S&W Factory Reblue Date Stop
I have seen a lot of discussion about getting a reblue on your dated S&W revolvers. I got a reject notice by email that the cutoff date is 1960. No guns before that date are eligable for a factory refinish. I had wanted a model of 1950 38/44HD reblued that had a DOM of 1956. No luck. This should answer that question for all. I guess I'll go to Ford's for the refinish that I want.

If it's any consolation, they stopped doing the carbona blueing in 1972,iirc,so you really wouldn't have been able to replicate the finish on your revolver even if they did accept it. Ford's does a good job......MOST of the time.

I just got my model 10-5 back from S&W and they did a fantastic job on it. I will post pics as soon as I get my camera battery charged. I have seen hundreds of K frames when I was in law enforcement in the USAF. They issued the model 15 for decades. I have never seen one as nice as this one.

One of my shooting Bud's had a M36 refinished by Smith a couple of years back (blued) and upon first look it seemed great. After shooting and carrying the gun for a year or so he asked me why the finish is not wearing like the original. It seems a bit less durable and actually looks like it has been carried longer than it has been after refinishing it.
I have not had any guns re-blued by Ford's but you might want to give them a call and ask what type of bluing they currently do. If it is more like the original Smith finish then as fat tom says above that might be the way to go.

My experience with recent S&W refinishing has been hit and miss. I think it depends on the refinisher your gun gets assigned to. I had to send one back but, the results were still less than satisfactory. A second gun came back nearly perfect. This isn't the same S&W that built my 1960s and 1970s revolvers and the production methods have changed as well as the personnel.

The cut off used to be model stamping (ca. 1958), but I guess they have moved the year later.
The quality of the factory refinish seems to depend on how much polishing is needed, among other variables. The current blue is blacker than original guns up to the 1970s.
