Default Stainless S&W 686

Can i polish it to a shine or does it need to be nickel plated? or chrome?

Get yourself some Mothers mag polish and have at it. It will shine like nickle when you're done.

Is the whole gun stainless(as in i can polish the stainless off)? can it get wet?

Yes the whole gun is stainless. You cant polish anything off. I wouldnt suggest getting any of your hand guns wet.

The only thing you can polish off is the engraving if you really go at it. I wouldn't use water, I use light oil with sandpaper. Then use polishes.

Tried that on my Glock 35, but it came out just as ugly.

I don't use water on my guns because the formula for rust is steel plus water. You would not believe some of the places I have found rust hiding on guns.

I tried harley davidson metal polish it looks ok, but not like chrome or nickel.

I use flitz to polish my stainless guns. When the black oxidation stops forming she is done.
