Default M41 wider ejection port

I have ejection problems with my M41. Simply is not reliable.

I´m thinking in a drastical action inspired in the Clark barrells. Those barrells don´t have the extensión for the rear sigth, and don´t have failures to eject trapping the cases.

I have seen a heavy barrel machined to open the “ejectión port” searching releability (image 1), but my barrell es the long and compensated barrel with slimmer body (image 3).

I´m will make an eliptical cut like the one in the image 3 to open a real big window to eject cases.

a) Anyone have make this attemp?
b) How strong can be this arregement?

I can´t buy a spare barrel
I can´t use optics or red dot´s
O can only use Aguila ammo.

First - identify your 41
SN range
Present bbl

I have some bbls in my collection that are cut, but not as severe as you indicate.

Cut from chamber back about 1.25" - this cut is to the sereated line on the top and angled back toward center of bbl line at about 45% except about 1/16" from the top to the angle. Basically a square cut lengthwise but angled toward centerline.

Hate to see the EFS cut like shown.

In general, the above is a "fix", but when correctly set up and good ammo, should not be necessary. Bullseye shooters are notorious for correcting nonexistant problems.

Buy hi velocity ammo and install a buffer on the recoil spring between the frame and slide. Standard velocity or match velocity ammo is the problem.

If I shoot 'high velocity' ammo my two M41s run perfectly. When I try match or standard velocity ammo I have ejection problems. I bought a case of Aquila match ammo at a significant premium and it don't work for function or accuracy in my M41s.

You will seriously weaken the rear sight on you M41 with that mill work. Don't do it. Change the type of ammo.

Engineer 1911:
Hi velocity ammo have less precision. By the way, don´t guarantee fiability, and for target shooting mental peace is critical. Aguila is the only ammo that I have in a radius of mmm… 1000 kilometers. So, I have to accept that diet for my pistol.

I agree with the risk of weak the rear sight,

TOMBECK:
Sire:
My M41 is SN A200XXXX, with the 73/8” barrell, and muzzle brake, I´ll have it. The pistol is very, very meticously reblued. I´m not happy with the idea.

The pistol carries a very weal fitted extractor, the ejector is extended,... I have a lot of years with the pistol, and I have tried everything to make it run without success. I don´t wan´t to make a mess, but I need to run the risk. What can I do wit the pistol? I can`t shoot it, I can´t sell it with lies to another shooter, lies never, I prefer use it like a paper weigth.

TOMBECK, I will take your suggestions, of course, on my own risk, can you be so generous to share with me some images of your already cutted barrels to make a better job?

I agree, is a "fix", I hate the idea too, but we don´t have pistolsmithers here, some metalbutchers only.

What is EFS?.

Bullseye shooters are notorious for correcting nonexistant problems. Mea culpa.. mea culpa

IROD - where is "home"
A200XXX - 1974 per SCS&W Supica
The barrel you are considering cutting is in the "collector" category and you should seriously consider getting another barrel before cutting it.

Send me your E-Mail address and I will send a couple of pictures of cut ones.

EFS is Extended Front Site - the front site is in a wedge cut and can be slid in and out to vary the site radius. These are very rare compared to the standard barrels.

Thumbs up

Tom Beckwith:

Hey Tom,
The M41 website link you posted here is EXCELLENT! I have seen a few instructionals, but the one you posted is about the best I have seen, precise and to the point.

Thanks for the post!

Regards,
chief38

I shoot bullseye most every weekend, and there are 3-4 shooters of the Smith 41. Everyone seems to minimize alibis shooting CCI Standard Velocity. Aguila is also very popular. I've personally found that Aguila is on the low side of the standard velocity window. You may want to try tuning your recoil spring. One of the 41 shooters took a coil or two off of the recoil spring of his pistol just to reliably shoot Aguila. I've shot Aguila pistol match in my High Standard, and while quite accurate, I'd get the occassional alibi.......usually a failure to feed. I noticed that Aguila has a waxy film all over the brass. It has a bit of a sticky feel to it. Reliability went way up, if I took the time to prep each round by wiping off the cases. You may want to try one or both of these fixes before making an irrepairable mod to a barrel that may still not address the problem.
