Default Pin Fell Out

I bought a nib 442 awhile back, and due to some issues I just got a new one from S&W. I never took the sideplate off the old one, but did on this one.

I oiled all the contact points, and pulled the trigger a few times to get it moved around, to make sure there would be no major excess.

I did this with both the open side facing up and down.

I noticed after doing this with the parts facing down, that a pin had fallen out.

I checked page7b to figure out where it went (the shop manual wasn't a help with the frame mounted firing pin) and it seems to be the pin that holds the firing pin in place (?).

I let the hammer drop, and kept it that way so I could push the pin back into place (it wouldn't go in otherwise).

First, does it sound like I did the right thing?

Second, the hammer had come out a little ways so I pushed it back in. Now, on the fifth chamber, the "single" action portion of the pull is very heavy (not so on the other 4) which makes no sense. Is it possible I did something wrong, or is it just because the gun is new and the parts haven't set yet?

Thanks in advance.

My mistakes will help me learn.

The pin that holds the firing pin & spring fell out. You need to turn the firing pin to find the flat spot so the retaining pin goes back in. The hammer won't press it but a pointed tool will.

The faq has some pictures that can help you out.

Now make sure all the parts ie: hammer, trigger & rebound block are pressed down all the way. Also make sure the side plate is down all the way and the side plate screws are tightened up.

Thanks 500, if it goes in, I am assuming I got it right? Should the hammer just barely be not touching the pin when at rest?

Dry fire the gun, and hold the trigger down. Look at the firing pin sticking out of the breech face. Now let go of the trigger, the pin should retract.

If the pin does this your firing pin and spring are put together correctly.

Looks like I am good to go on the firing pin then, thanks!

Any thoughts on the "hangy" single action trigger over the one chamber?

I'd dryfire it some. Sometimes the guns need to be broken in.
I'd guess it's either the hand that is too long for a ratchet (dry fire will wear it in and fix it up naturally), or the ejector/ejector rod is bent, that will need an adjustment to correct. see the other topics below to learn how to adjust the ejector rod.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks again!
