Default S&W 625 JM FRont Sight Job

I was lucky enough to get a 625 JM Model in .45ACP two weeks ago. I love shooting this revolver. I have been experimenting. I took off the wood JM grips and got some Pachymer Decelerators. I kind of like them better for my hands.

The pistol was lightly used and I got it for $725 w/ 25 moon clips and the S&W Box. It shot rather poorly the first time out but I discovered that the rear sight screw was loose. A little Blue Loctite fixed that right up and really improved the accuracy.

The Gold Dot front sight isn't bad but I'd like to put a High Viz Green Sight on it. They are about $45 but High Viz says they don't come drilled and they recommend a Gunsmith. I don't have one? The pin that holds the front sight to the barrel is just "microscopic" - it looks tapered, too. I have no idea how to do that job myself? Has anyone ram across this job before?

Thanks,

John

if it's a JM model, it should have the interchangeable front sight system -- pull back on the front sight and lift it out of the slot. The front sight is held in by a spring and plunger and the cross pin. You can tell if it has the interchangeable front sight system if a) the cross pin is very close to the front of the sight blade (rather than near the middle) and b) if there is an extra hole just above the muzzle.

S&W sells hi-viz front sights for the interchangeable sight system in both green...

Thank you ever so much. I looked at the mechanism and saw how it works. The dot dot sight came out like a snap. I feel dumb but I'm glad I asked the question. Thanks for the tip on the S&W Hi-Viz Sight, too.

You have now discovered why I, and many others, love the quickly removable front sight. You prefer the HiViz. I prefer a black, serrated ramp. Both of us can easily and inexpensively get the configuration we want. All guns should be this way.

Wow! This answered the EXACT same question I have. The brass bead on the JM is nice, but odd light sources seem to play havoc with my sight alignment and picture. Now I need to find a nice red ramp like my 686 SSR has. Thanks for the info.

Cheers ,

FnB

I too don’t like the brass bead and would like to change to a high viz. What is the height of the original front sight?
Thanks

You need to remove the front sight and use a caliper to measure from the bottom of the sight, where it contacts the barrel, to the top of the sight. I have ordered a few of the hi-viz sights, and .250" seems to be the standard sight height from the guns that I have measured. If you are shooting at shorter, or longer ranges than the gun was set up for then you will need to adjust accordingly.

The swap is so simple! I put a Hi-Viz on my JM. There are 2 heights available. 2 colors available also. I believe that .250" is standard. Makes it much better for me. Bob
