Default I'm not sure this fits here

I don't usually take my guns apart. I have a 1911 AI colt(made in 1943?) that I would like to see if there is a "serial #" under the firing pin plate. Do you have to remove the slide in order to remove that plate securing the firing pin?
Thanks for your time,
Joe

No!!
You should be able to lock the slide back with an empty magazine or slide catch & then push the firing pin in & slide the cover off..
If you had a series 80 or newer it would require you to push the firing pin safety in while pushing the FP forward..

You don't "have to" but it's usually easier.

To do it without removing the slide, put an empty magazine in the gun and lock the slide back. As long as you don't force the slide stop down, the slide will stay locked back.
You can also open the slide and wedge a small block of wood or plastic into the ejection port to hold it open.

Use a 1/8" inch punch to push the firing pin in, then with your hand over the rear of the slide to catch the firing pin and spring, slide the firing pin retaining plate down and off the slide.

Dfar and Headknocker, Your help is appreciated. Your comments are very detailed and welcomed! I would place this forum at the top of the pile of gun related forums. Everyone is willing to share their knowledge without insulting or making you feel uncomforitable. That happens on other forums.
Thanks again, Joe
