Converting M48-3 to 22LR.
I know it can be done, that's not the question. And I am well aware of the dimentional differences of .223 -vs- .224.
I recently bought an M17 cylinder at a garage sale but it was basically trashed before I bought it. I bought another cylinder but the gas ring is on the cylinder. My question is can my newest cylinder, with the gas ring, be turned on a lathe to remove the gas ring and made to mate up to my current yoke?

I don't think that would work. The cylinders with gas ring has that as a separate part pressed in. The cranes with gas rings ride on a cylinder without the step that the pressed-on gas ring seats in.

I don't think he means to remove the entire gas ring including the part pressed into the step. Just turning off enough to "look" like a cyl w/o the gas ring.

I understand his intention to face off the cylinder's gas ring and use it with a crane containing the integral gas ring. I don't think it would work because there is little to hold the fragment of gas ring in place. Without an intact gas ring, cylinder binding from firing residue becomes a real problem.

Have you measured the lengths of both cylinders?
As I recall the .22 Jet version has a longer cylinder but I cant remember on the Model 48.

Wouldn't the gas ring on the yoke take care of the problem? I realize you have a bigger opening if the gas ring on the cylinder is missing, but it does seem it would seal it enough.

Yes, I measured the dimentions of the M48 and compared them to the measurement of the M17/18 cylinder. The measurements of OAL were within 1/1000 of each other and the measurements of diameter were 2/1000, although I didn't write the dimentions down so I can't reference back to what the dimentions are. Finding a Jet cylinder with 22 LR inserts seems like an expensive option.
Maybe I'll just call up Brownells and see if they have the correct yoke for my cylinder.
Thanks everybody,
