Default Paint Removal?

At the Phoenix gun show this weekend, I bought a Model 39 auto pistol slide, barrel, bushing and recoil spring. The slide appeared to be blued but when I got it home I discovered it was black painted over nickel. Any suggestions on how to get the black paint off without harming the nickel underneath, or dissolving the red plastic insert in the front sight?

I would try Methylene Chloride which is sold as brake cleaner and with dissolve most paint an d grease. Work with it carefully outdoors.
