Default 586 broken firing pin.

Hi all,I have a small problem with my 586.The firing pin broke and I'm unable to find the parts needed for replacement.I tried Midway and Brownells but to no avail. Is it difficult to replace the parts? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Firing pins are commonly available. Is it a frame mounted pin or a hammer mounted pin?

The funny thing is that I never dry fired it without snap caps,so it was meant to break sooner or later,I guess.

This is probably a dumb question but have you tried the S&W factory?

When you get it repaired make sure the hammer nose(firing pin) is not striking off center and breaking after repeated strikes of the bushing in the recoil shield.

SMITH & WESSON : HAMMER NOSE - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools

The link posted is what you are looking for. You didn't find one, most likely because you searched for a firing pin when you should have looked for a hammer nose. Brownell's has them in stock according to the website this morning.

That's weird because I looked on the Brownell's site and according to the page I was on, the hammer nose for 586 had been discontinued. Thank you for finding a better link.

edit: Here's the page that fooled me.

That might be reusable, and it's probably a little roll pin anyway. McMaster Carr sells roll pins, as do a lot of other places.

Not too difficult:

SMITH & WESSON : Hammer Nose Rivet (940-057-700) - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools

Nice thing with the S&Ws, a lot of parts are shared. Same rivet is used on K and L frames, probably on N frames too.

As has already been stated, the existing rivet may be reuseable if you are carefult and the rivet isn't too worn. I reuse them all the time but always keep a replacement rivet in the parts box just in case. Use a small punch that just fits the rivet with passing through. When resetting the pin (used or new) use two center punches, one from each side, to flare the ends and center the rivet.

the roll pin should be easy to find, try your local auto parts. Just take the one you drive out so you can get the right one. I would use a brass punch. I was always told that dry firing a floater nose would hurt it. Its the fixed firing pins you do not want to dry fire. Take your time and deep breaths. good luck bob k.

Were you able to obtain the needed parts? I found several hammer noses and rivets from when I did the M updates. Let me know if you need one or the other, or both.
