5906 Broken Extractor
Might SW fix this under warranty?
In case they will not, does anyone know how to remove the extractor from the 5906.
Any guidance/comments are welcome.

S&W will fix it, but might want you to send it in...if I recall correctly the extractor requires some fitting to the slide. That said, it's easy to remove...just use an appropriate sized punch and drive the extractor pin out from the top of the slide while keeping your finger over the rear of the extractor so as not to lose control of the spring.

5906
Since it requires fitting, I will send it in. I am leery concerning the costs and negative possibilities.
Thanks for your input.

Call S&W after they return on Jan 3rd. They might well send you a pre-paid shipping label and offer to repair it under warranty.
Replacing the extractor requires the use of a couple of specialized tools. A Go/No-Go bar gauge is used to check the fit of the extractor hook and the extractor is fitted by filing on the adjustment pad. A force dial gauge is used to check extractor pin tension for proper tolerance (during very minimal deflection of the extractor). There's a standard spring generally used, but there are also lighter & heavier springs available which may be needed to get the extractor tension to fall within the proper range for a particular guns.
Not a kitchen table ... or even a garage bench ... project for someone not familiar and experienced with replacing the extractor in a S&W 3rd gen pistol (and having the right tools).
Let the factory handle it for you. You can also ask them to check the rest of the gun for parts wear or possible replacement of an older part with a revised part ... such as they ejector. The original ejector design had a short tip and a sharp angle under the tip which could allow a stress riser to develop and the tip to break off in some guns. The revised ejector has a longer ejector (for faster ejection, especially when higher pressure ammunition develops more slide velocity) and a curved angle replacing the cornered angle to reduce stress.
Here's an older ejector and a newer, revised ejector for the 59XX guns. The older one is on the bottom.

Did it myself no problems
The extractor on my 6906 broke around halloween. I researched repair here. Called S&W they would not waranty (not original owner). They quoted a repair price of 100$ plus shipping both ways +50$. Plus an unknown return time They would not sell the parts to me to repair the gun.
Ordered a spring, pin and extractor from numrich. Used a vice and the corect size punches, blue painters tape and leather to protect finishes.
I did not have to beat on mine hard at all to get out the pin and it went together easy also. I have shot about 300 rds since without any stopages.
So I fixed it myself for 35$ vs 150$+ S&W wanted, and they could still have it. That is an extra $115 I can spend on primers and powder.
Good luck.

Every once in a great while it's possible to find a 3rd gen 9mm pistol where the extractor might fit in a slide and function normally without filing. Not very common at all, but the tolerances on the new parts are much better. The problem comes with the looser tolerances of the older production 3rd gen guns.
Also, sometimes in the older slides the spring hole might be out of spec by either depth or the shape of the bottom of the hole (which could change the way the bottom coil fit in the hole, and therefore the way the spring would sit in the hole). I was told by the repair center that a properly sized hand-powered ball end mill tool was sometimes required to correct the problem, although the nested spring set used for a while for repair of 59XX series guns worked well, too.
On the older models with the narrow barrel tab & breech face, the tension of the extractor spring should be 4-8lbs on the force dial gauge when extractor tail movement is detected (when the dial gauge hook pulls the extractor hook). On the newer models with the wide barrel tab & breech face it should be somewhere between 7-11lbs.
If an armorer can't get the proper spring weight to be met, the gun should be returned to S&W. It might require some further attention that isn't commonly taught in the armorer classes. I've encountered some instances where a particular gun required a heavier tension on the extractor for normal extraction/ejection, and made the repair myself after discussing it with the factory repair center techs, but care had to be taken to ensure the increased tension didn't reach the point where it interfered with proper feeding.
A local gunsmith familiar with working on S&W pistols might be able to make the repair, you know.

5906
I have been given the name of a local pistol smith who is known for working on S and W semi autos.
The gun has been logged in for repair. I will follow up later.
Thanks
PS Serial No. TCT282x.
I believe it was made in 1979 but do not know for sure. It has the hooked trigger guard.
