Default Stripping K Frame Target Grips

Picked up some grips today at the gun show that are good wood, but need to be refinished. Stopped at the local chain hardware store to get some stripper. I was told to use acetone. What is the best way to strip the grips?

I agree with other forum members and soak the grips an acetone bath, I found it takes about 2 hrs. to break down the finish, wear gloves and brush all the recesses with a nylon type of tooth brush (one that will not be affected by the acetone). When they are clean, you can let them air dry. Please use proper ventilation when using acetone, it is very flamable in a vapor state.
I personally use Minwax water base urathane semi gloss on my grips, several coats (dries very fast) and let them set for a few days before I reinstall them on the Firearm.
This is my Quick and easy method to get the grips looking like new, for my Best Revolvers (which is all 4 of them).
Hope that the info. helps you out.
S&W All the way.

There are two individuals here on the forum who are quite good at this.

One is VM (I think) and another's handle escapes me.

Search here for "grip refinish" or "stripping grips"??? If you have not already done so and you might find them.

I think they use acetone.

I've been using Kleen Strip KS-3 Premium Stripper on grips, ie, Colt, SW, & Ruger.
Great results, and it removes finish from the checkered areas too, using a soft tooth brush.

I already had a gallon can of this stuff left over from a furniture stripping project, and figured if it strips antique furniture, why not grips?

If You reside nearby My 10-20, I'll gladly give You some, no charge.

Good luck with the grips, and btw, Krylon crystal clear satin indoor/outdoor finish sprays on nicely, penetrates, and with 3 light coats, the grips look fantastic.
Birchwood-Casey tru-oil makes a great finish too.

I usually allow at least 3 months curing time, to make sure that human oils don't soften the finish.

I strip them with Homer Formby furniture refinisher (or the similar Minwax product), then go over them again with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue from the Formbys. Rub along the grain with fine steel wool. Then use 2 or 3 thin coats of gloss or semigloss polyurethane applied with a paper towel. I get results like this.
