Default India stone or Lansky sharpner kit stones?

In an effort to utilize what I have my question is, I have a lansky 5 stone delux knife sharpner kit, do any of these stones resemble the grit or texture to the stones required to debur the action on a smith when performing a trigger job?

thanks in advance.

bigshot500,

Sorry, I am not familiar with the Lansky sharpening system, but I do have another brand knife sharpener kit. In my kit the only stone that is an Arkansas Stone is the very finest grit. I do use an Arkansas very fine stone on my guns, however it is not from the knife sharpening kit. I purchased a separate "gun stone kit" so many years ago I don't remember where I got it, but I still see it in supply catalogs from time to time. It has four very fine Arkansas stones in different shapes for different purposes., and is relatively inexpensive.

The reason I would NOT use my knife kit stones on guns is that when you stone small parts you tend to wear the stone unevenly making it less efficient when sharpening a knife. When sharpening a knife, the stone tends to wear more evenly and contacts the blade the full width of the stone at the same time. If you wear grooves in it stoning small parts, you will ruin the knife stone for its intended purpose.

Try Brownell's and see if they have Arkansas stones for Gun Smithing purposes.

Regards,

I have a Lansky Diamond Stone Kit and it works great for honing gun parts. I use the two or three finest stones, then use the Lansky "Sapphire" stone for the final polish. I have nothing against using dedicated "gunsmithing" stones, but these were easy to find.

If the stones are "fine" or "extra fine" and you can get the angle you need on the part they're good. Just don't take off any more metal than is necessary to remove the high spots and burrs. You don't need a high polish. Just smooth. Light pressure. Don't even think of using anything coarser than 600 grit. What I use on some parts is actually 1000 to 1500 grit wet or dry sandpaper on a piece of glass. To smooth the surface in the frame where the rebound slide rides I use a short piece of 1/2 in square wood with sandpaper wrapped around it. Can't really get a Lanksy stone in there.

Does Jerry Miculek's dvd show you exactly the areas to clean up when performing a trigger job? I just ordered a copy yesterday.

I believe it will. More importantly it shows you what to keep your stone away from. Haven't seen Miculek's DVD, I learned from Kuhnhausen.

I would also like to know what can be done to reduce the grit feel in my new M&P 9mm, anyone know for sure if Jerry Miculek's dvd shows what needs to be done on the M&P's.
