action problem , please help??
Hi guys , I am looking at a M&P in .38 special , when the trigger being pulled and the cylinder rotating, that all works fine.{ double or single action }
But when you open the cylinder to reload the gun and close it, the cylinder keeps spinning around until you pull the trigger, then it lock in place just fine.
any ideas ?? I looked over this C seires M&P at the gun store unsure whether this is a big job or not , any thoughts??

cylinder spinning
that is caused by the bolt in the bottom of the frame not poping up to lock in the cylinder notches. it may just need a good cleaning and lubing. if that does not cure it you may need a bolt or a spring.

The part is called a cylinder stop & spring. Ronnie is right, the stop is stuck in the down postion. If it don't pop up it should not be fired. Get it fixed or looked at.

I picked up a Mdl. 36 with the same problem. If I'm reading right this is a problem with the bolt, spring or both. Should both parts be changed? And is this something you can do yourself or should it be done by a gunsmith? Also, what may have caused this. My gun looks in great condition otherwise. Thanks.

On a S&W, the part called the bolt is the part that connects to the thumb piece (which swings out the cylinder).
The bolt has nothing to do with the cylinder stop sticking in the down position.
And yes, one or both need to be changed. Without looking at the problem, I can't tell exactly what part failed.

Before changing/replacing any parts make sure it's CLEAN and lubricated. A visual inspection may determine any defects, but if your unsure how have someone or the factory inspect it for you.

also,dont dry fire gun like this,as the charge holes might not be lined up,and you will peen the cylinder face.
the ((pawl)) is stuck or binding in the window.if it works sometimes,your spring is ok.its probably wor just enough to wear an edge of the pawl is hitting the window in frame.oil it good,and it will probaly fix it.pop the plate off and clean everything good,and it should be ok.wish you were closer,i would do it for you for nothing

Hiya Robbt,
If this is a used gun and you are not familiar with the previous owner he may have closed the cylinder"Hollywood Style" ala flicking it closed with his wrist. It sometimes ever so slightly bends the cylinder stop making it stick in the down position. May need replacing.
Or it may be just dry...put a drop of gun oil down there and flick it up and down with your thumb if it pops back up under pressure put another drop of oil in there and stand the gun horizontal overnight, in the morning it should be good to go.... Nothing ventured nothing gained.
