Copper Chore Boy Fix
I have seen posts on how well it'll get lead out of a barrel... but I could never find the stuff.
Finally found some 100% copper scouring wool at a store I was in. (Giant supermarket... not a giant supermarket, "Giant" is the name of the store that had the 100% copper scouring pads.) I kept looking for the Chore Boy brand name, and nobody around me had it, this was another brand name but all copper.
Cut it up, wrapped around a bore brush and now I can easily get my barrels like new again. It works like a charm.
I'm sold. Thanks to all who have posted this simple fix for a leaded barrel.

Just about every convenience store near a big city carrys Chore Boy. I guess the folks that roll their own cigarettes and like those miniature roses in glass pipes like to keep their pots and pans really clean. The clerks say the Chore Boy sells almost as well as cigarette rolling paper.

It's colloquially known as "Choy" on the street.

I'm amazed how many people I run into who clean their pots and pans inside their cars. And they must have really small pots to clean with those tiny bits of copper. I didn't know there was still any legitimate use for Chore Boy anymore.

To the OP: You want to know how well it works? I was trying to slug the bore on a Mosin-Nagant rifle with a piece of buckshot, and the rod I was using slipped past the shot, mushing it into the rifling. Yes, a whole OO buckshot stuck into the rifling, stretched out enough so only a small crescent moon shape of lead could be seen through the bore, with most of the bore clear. A copper scrubbie on a bronze brush fixed it in about 20 minutes. Bore is fine (and much cleaner now). Brush is shot, and I'm still vacuuming up slivers of lead and scrubbie in my spare room, but it worked.
To the rest of you... shame on you. There might be children reading... . Just kidding. The new guy doesn't want to grow up and be the Culture Nazi, I promise.

Wow!
Learn somethin new every day. I never heard of that goin on.
All I ever see comin out of all the convienient marts and gas stations are people buying Blunts, or 2 and 3 cans of Red Bull along with some condoms. That Red Bull must be some wicked stuff.
I'm gonna start paying more attn. I'm still only going to use the copper pads for cleaning my barrels, only now I'm going to lock it up in the safe with the guns.

yeah you have to buy the pure copper pads. use a magnet to test if in doubt.
also use to clean forceing cone by wrapping around an oversize brush, insert rod thru bore and thread it on brush held in the open cylinder area then pull back against the cone and spin around. that's where a lot of lead will be deposited if you shoot cast slugs. works great

I was ignorant of the other uses also. No wonder I could not find them. I looked in regular stores, not CS. Looked everywhere in town and nowhere. Went home and my wife had some with the cleaning supplies. Guess I better keep a check on her now.

Aparently I'm such a decrepit old fart that I haven't a clue what words to Google. Any tips?

For .22s I use a toft of fine bronze wool laid over the sharpened end of a short piece of pencil. I cut a goove or two on the sides of the wood cone to grip the bronze wool. Your method would work also so its just a matter of which is quicker. The bronze wool is available from Brownell's, True Value Hardware and yachting supply stores. It's available in fine, medium & coarse. I like fine for small chores like cleaning the corner between the gas ring and front face of the cylinder.
Best Regards from a Decripit Old Fart,
Gil

You are no older fart than I am! After 40+ years of doing autopsies on these people and cleaning out their pockets and finding their pipes, I never had any idea what that little wad was in the end of the pipe. No wonder I could never find any to get the lead out of my barrels. Now I know where to buy Chore Boys!

Here in the meth capital of the east, I'm told Chore Boy is used to manufacture the stuff. I can't speak from experience, but the local convenience store owner was required to take it off the shelves. He may have it behind the counter like Sudafed is now kept. Its a weird world out there!

I have a very old .38 made in Germany and use it for my "ammo testing" (it was given to me, used, in 1970). I noticed a buildup of lead just into the barrel and no amount of scrubbing seemed to work. Tried the Chore Boy (actually made by Butler and called pot scrubbers) in the method described by 5906fan and viola! No more lead. Thanks!!! So simple and inexpensive.

I buy them by the case off eBay since they work great on pots too (go figure). Never knew they had a link to drugs. Guess I'm in a database somewhere now.
