Is this normal on a new M-60?

I just bought my wife a new Model 60, 2⅛". Everything is good, but the Lock-up isn't completely tight, with the cylinder closed either cocked or not I can slightly rotate it. I also just bought a new 686+ 3" and that locks-up tight as can be. Is this easy to rectify, no big deal, or normal for a 60? I really don't want to send a brand new gun off to Smith for a few months. Any suggestions welcome.

Perfectly normal. You want to check for cylinder play with the hammer down and the trigger held back, the same condition the gun's in when it's fired. Even then, a little rotational play is normal.

well you state that the cylinder rotates a little, if it rotates, where the cylinder holes are not in line with the barrel you have a problems that needs to go back to the factory, but if there is just a slight wiggle in the cylinder it should not be a problem. some of my s&w have a little wiggle and others do not, i think it is because some of them have longer hands that index the cylinder and keep the cylinder up tight against the bolt in the bottom of the frame.

Thanks guys, learned something new, with the hammer down and trigger pulled it tightens up just fine. You made my day, I was getting bummed this morning!

Some "wiggle" is normal and desirable so the chamber and barrel can align as the bullet jumps the gap. The guns with very little wiggle have a hand that's slighty too thick usually lock up early and have a hard spot at the end of the DA pull.

good info and advice above, spot on, besides, just "How much" loose, is "loose" ...very subjective...........for revolvers "mass produced" it is the nature of the beast , allows a bit of forgiving to ensure the cylinder and barrel align, and the bullet "jump"..........it is NOT a "closed breach" and even THEN, there is "jump" from the shell case, to the lands& grooves...all way too technical for this early in the morning......
sounds like a NICE gun, shoot it, enjoy it......practice, practice,practice
