Default Rear Sight Assembly for a 66-2

I need to replace a rear sight assembly on a 4” 66-2. I’ve browsed through Brownell’s and Midway’s websites, but I have a few questions before I order:

1. I know that the “old style” part is the proper one for this. I also know that there is/was a variety of blade heights at the very least. Are the bodies of these assemblies the same for all K, L, and N frames? Or are they specific for each model?
2. What is the correct blade height for a 4” 66-2? (If the bodies are the same, and I can only find one with the incorrect blade height I am more than willing purchase the correct height blade and swap them out.)
3. Will a “new style” assembly work on a 66-2? I know the “old style" is flat on the end, and the "new style" is rounded…but is the location for the attachment screw different, or are there other parts of the “new style” assembly that would make it incompatible with the older frame?

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me on this one!

Matt

you need the old style attachment.

K/L should be the same,.......N's are different

Yes, you can install the "new style" sight assy. It does require drilling and tapping a 6-48 hole. If you do, be carefull about hitting the barrel as the bit breaks thru the frame and you'll need a bottoming tap as well as a starter tap. Drill 2 more holes while you're at it and you can have the D&T'ed hole pattern under the sight. K, L, and N sight assy's are the same except for the blades of different style/height. I'm not positive but think your gun came with a .146 blade.

Default Thanks for the info

I don't have the skills or equipment to start drilling and tapping the frame, so I will hunt up an old style k/l frame assembly with a .146 blade.

Thanks again!

I know the "new style" sights are the same. The sight assy's and D&Ted "scope" bases get exchanged regularly between my K and N frames.

S&W will drill and tap your frame for the "new style" 3 hole pattern and you can then install the "new style" sight. They'll also cut the "half moon" and install a pinned front sight blade (like the later guns) if you'd like a visible front sight.

I'm not sure the "old style" sights come drilled. I think they were all drilled in place like the pinned front sights and come un-drilled and don't normally interchange.

You might check the classified section. Here is a link for a closed thread for a member I have bought parts from before (Silvertip43).

S&W K,L, and N frame parts

He is good to work with. You might PM him to see if he has any rear sights left.

My 4 inch model 19's have .146" rear blades.

Default More questions...

Thanks again for all the input. These things seem a bit harder to find than I thought!

Jepp2, I will take a look through the classifieds...thanks for the suggestions.

Also, Numrich has sight assemblies for 2" 15-4, -5, and -6. Is the leaf for the 2" frame different, or might this work?

Rear Sight Assembly, .146 - For 2" Barrels

They also have the leaf for the 3+" K-frames. I looked over the FAQ's and saw the schematic and instructions for replacing the rear blade. How difficult are these assemblies to put together from parts?

Any other suggestions on where to track one of these buggers down?

Thanks again!

Matt

Ok. So what is the difference? I've installed the "new style" sight drilling and tapping the 3 hole pattern on a couple "old style" guns but they were N frames.

Not to be a pain, but does anyone know for sure if the rear sight assembly for the 2" k-frames (15-4, etc.) are different from those for 4" frames (like my 66-2)? I don't want to order the wrong part!
