Default Endshake-how much is too much?

I recently sold a Model 65 and the buyer returned it due to too much endshake. Frankly, I had never noticed it when I owned the gun and I had shot it many times. It does have some small amount of movement with the cylinder closed and my feeler gauges say it ranges from 0.003" all the way forward to 0.007". all the way back. Is this excessive and should I install bushings to take up some of the difference? If so, should I try to take it all out or only part of the 0.004" difference?

If 7 thousandths is the most you can measure, with the cylinder forced backwards as far as you can, I don't believe this is excessive. I have heard that 0.008" is considered a maximum design clearance at the factory. I recently had an N frame that had 0.012" endshake. It shot really well and had no bad characteristics that I could find.

Have you checked the sticky "FAQ" at the top of S&W Smithing section?

I find the information in there VERY useful. Post 3 gives the endshake spec and Post 8 goes through ways to adjust. Make sure you differentiate between the 2 different types of endshake. I used the bushings to correct mine with great results.

I suspect that Andy had End Shake and the B/C gap confused. While a B/C gap of as much as 0.010 isn't really an issue in the milder calibers that much end shake would need to be addressed immediately. The problem is that cylinder slapping forward and back will act a lot like a slide hammer. As a result it will quicklly increase and eventually the cylinder will start slapping the barrel.

In your case the end shake is checking in at 0.004 inch and this is the point where I think that it needs to be corrected. When you correct it the ideal should be between 0.0005 and 0.001 inch. If you can find an endshake shim at 0.0035 inch that is what I would install because it will minimize the distance the cylinder can move during recoil and make the repair last much longer. If you find the cylinder binds a bit, back off to a 0.003 inch shim. Good news is that you are early enough in addressing this that all you need to do is install a shim or stretch the yoke shaft a small amount, no need to re-seat the barrel which is one of the problems with waiting too long.
