Default Model 36 cylinder replacement

There is a bulge in one chamber of the cylinder of my Model 36 which I purchased new in 1983. The gun has spent most of the past 28 years in my gun cabinet and is in near perfect condition. What are the chances of a blued replacement cylinder from S&W or Numerich matching the blued frame? What is a typical fee for a smith to do a cylinder replacement?

If you are worried about a blue match, why not look for a nickel or stainless cylinder and make your revovler a Pinto?

Actually I thought a bit about doing that. But then I am not a "wild-and-crazy" kind of guy.

Has anyone had an older Model 36 cylinder replaced recently? I'd just like to know if they can still do work on obsolete models. S&W is shut down until August 15 and I am not the most patient of guys.

When did the J frame go to the magnum frame and did the cylinder dimensions change at that time?

Tom

Just got a response from Cylinder and Slide concerning the cylinder replacement. They do not have a cylinder for a Model 36. I'd have to find my own cylinder assembly. They would fit it to my gun and because it would be quite likely that the blue would not match, the whole gun would need to be reblued. So far their charge without the cylinder assembly and shipping is over $340. I like this little gun a lot, but with a total fix of over $500, I think I'll pass on having them do the work.

It will be interesting to see what S&W has to say.

Guess it's not a good idea to mess up and obsolete gun.
