Default Front sight removal

I am looking at changing the front sights on 4 inch model 19. This is a front sight that will need to be milled off(no pin or dovetail)? Has anyone machined a keyway for a pinned sight, or made a DX removable sight from the existing base? I have done transverse dovetails like that used by Cylinder and Slide (CS0123 - Extreme Duty Fixed Sight for Adj Sight Revolver K-L-N Frame with Dovetail Front) in the past but the front sight must be very tall and this will be a night sight with white outline like the XS dot type sight.

I guess I could use Weigand base but they are not very pretty and it's a shame to have to mill off the riser to put another on another and have the cost of the base too

Thanks
-Robert

Default "FIXED SIGHTS" ?

Robert, you fixed front sight may be pinned and the pins polished so that they are not visible. Please have it investigated by an experienced G-Smith to be sure before you start the milling machine!

It looks like both the classic and DX are possible.....

You can mill off the front blade and put the woodruff cut (or use an end mill) in the front base and drill it and make it just like a factory pinned front sight. I think S&W will do this.

Thanks Smitholdtimer,

It did turn out that the front sight was pinned. A little cold blue on the side of the sight base reviled the pin and a tap with a punch removed the front blade. Of course I found this out the hard way. ( 10x was not enough to see the pin) Thanks again for the tip.
