I thought I had found a decent shooter when I ran on to this .38 DA Third Model. The bore and mechanics were very good. I was merrily dry snapping it on the porch when the sideplate screw popped out, bounced off my knee, and was last seen going down a crack between the deck boards. I haven't worked with the insides of top breaks before, but it appears that the hammer stud is freshly cut. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the scoring on the sideplate, resulting, no doubt, from an attempt to free a frozen sideplate screw. The sideplate is out a bit but hasn't fallen off, yet. I still think it would make a decent shooter, and I suppose it would be easier to find a parts gun than it would be to find just a hammer stud and screw. Or I could just throw it into a box and wait for a better one. What do you think?
P.S Don't snap your piece where there are cracks in the floor.
