Default Model 28-2 rear sight leaf

Hi folks,

I just picked up a 28-2 6 inch to use as a shooter.

At some point the rear sight leaf was damaged on one corner. The weapon was probably dropped.

Does anyone know how I can find a rear sight leaf?

How do I remove the leaf?

If I can remove it I can clean up the bent corner with a fine file, file the other corner to match, and cold blue the bare metal.

Amusingly, I remember paying a gunsmith to round off the rear sight leaf corners, of the model 28 I owned then, when I was a brand new LEO in 1969 or so.

Any suggestions appreciated.

R/S

Jim

I found a replacement piece for for my 28-2 here. I suggest buying the entire kit to replace your rear sight leaf, as they will have all the parts you need. I think Brownell's or Midway has the parts you need.

Another question.

It looks like I can buy the rear sight kit from S&W for $10.58 and another $20.00 or so for the installation tool.

The rear sight blade comes in different heights. Anyone have an idea about which height is stock for the 28-2 with 6" barrel?

Thanks,

Jim

I am not sure about the 6", but my 4" took the .146 blade. Definitely buy the installation tool and follow the instructions to the letter! My replacement ordeal could have been avoided by having the proper tool.

I have a 6" 28-2 and it also uses the .146 blade. Not sure about the S&W kit but I do know that the kit from Brownell's comes with extra detents and that is really handy when the only one you have left decides to fly away. It is not much bigger than a grain of sand and once out of your sight is pretty much gone for good. If your luck was good enough to find a lost detent then you probably wouldn't have a bad sight to begin with!!!
