Default 28-2 timing

I have a 28-2 that the timing is a little slow. I think I need to replace the "hand". Do I order the one that is listed as "hand" or the "oversized hand"?

Jimmy,

Now I'm not an expert, but this is what I understand about the over-sized hand.....if the current hand is sloppy in the window (the slot in the frame) you will need an over-sized hand as a replacement. But, I believe that you will need a special file to fit the new hand to the window for the proper clearance. Also, you might check the ratchet and see if it is worn....it might be easier to replace a worn ratchet (star) than fit a new hand.

I have a guy here in SA that is very good with the S&W's. PM if you need a pro's number.

Good luck with the 28.

Sir - You need to know the width of the hand you have now. In many cases, a new std. hand will do the job. If there is a lot of extractor wear on the teeth, an oversize hand may be required. Most of the time, it is trial and error required. I would order both size hands & use whichever fits the best. DO NOT change the extractor unless it is absolutely needed. Fitting a new one is not a job for the novice "smith".
