I received the stocks, today. They're great! I put them on one of my 28s. A no dash that is sort of my regular shooter. Thanks again, I really like them! I have them on four different guns, now!

I bought a pair for my K-38 back in the mid 60s. Don't know what gun they're on now without digging through all of them. I gave the princly sum of $11.00 new, back then! Steve Herrett was alive then.

It was a 70 minute drive one way. Took a friend and his son to see the property before he joins the club. Figured if we drove that far, we should take something to shoot. When I saw some of the members walking with muzzle loaders I realized it was the late deer season. OOPS. Oh well, he wants to join. It was abt 44 degrees, not bad. Larry

Before we moved to the farm, about 32 years ago, I had to drive to a gun club about 5 miles north of town. The first chance we got, we laid out a 100 yard range in the shelterbelt right behind where we were building our new house! I also designed a special room in the basement for reloading and a gun safe. It's seen a ton of use with my four sons and three grandsons! Plus many friends!

That's just a beautiful thing!

I know lots'a forum members have their own ranges. I live in a suburban neighborhood. We have to go under ground from our basement loading rooms, usually in 25 yards of 3 ft concrete culvert with the target on a pulley.

Nice range Dick. We talk abt downsizing since the kids are gone. She says we should buy something where I could shoot in the back. Shootable land is harder to find convenient for us where we work. Most rural towns wouldn't say nothing shooting .22's but it all depends who you're neighbors are. I often considered going underground also like Jim mentioned. Wouldn't be overwelmingly expensive and I really don't want the hassle of moving again. I'll quit the club mentioned when I can't hunt the birds anymore. Finding a close 100 yd range would make me happy at that point. Larry

I still thank my parents for buying this place, even though they've been gone for nearly 20 years! I've lived in cities and don't like it.

When sending in a cylinder to the factory for re-bluing, do they mark it in some way to show that it has been re-blued?

I recall from threads on this forum that they no longer do, not even if the entire gun is re-blued.

That's what I thought! I had a cylinder for a Mod. 28 re-blued and couldn't find a mark on it. I'm getting ready to send one in off my Chopped Mod. 27. Chopped 27-2

What do they charge to re-blue a cylinder?

That's a nice shooter you have there. Looks like your sight has a 'quick remove' front blade so you could easily have more adjustment range on the rear sight for different loads.

I know what you mean about the barrel crown. Every detail has to be stated before the work is done or else it leaves too many decisions up to the gunsmith.

Boy that .38-44 is coming along. I would also give Bowen Arms a try too with the rebluing, they do great work. I bet with some handloads of 170 grain cast #358429 bullets and 12.5 grains of 2400 or so it would group really nicely (my Outdoorsman's favorite load).

The re-blued cylinder is from a Mod. 27. The Outdoorsman is done. That 429 bullet is one of my favorites in all my .38/.357s.

Hey Dick, I saw this post was back at the top. Have you taken the 38/44 back out to shoot? Sometimes you have to work up a load it likes, some of the old girls are fussy abt what they eat. It's a simple basal cell skin cancer on my back, but they're doing a new kind of treatment, instead of surgery. It's kind of like a mixture of battery acid and nuclear dust applied at home at bedtime each night for twenty four days straight! Only four nights to go! By that time either I or it will be dead! The cost of it would have bought a lnib Mod. 27! $800! Hopefully, I'll be all well and back to normal next week!

I'm just waiting for it to heal, now. Until it does, it's hard to get comfortable in bed or in an easy chair. The doc doesn't want it covered with a bandage of any kind. It's been 3 days. I'll know more in another 3 or 4. Don't go back to the doc until the 6th. Thanks for asking!

Chopped 27-2
I did get out to the range, yesterday! 73° and light breeze! I took the Outdoorsman and the Chopped Mod. 27-2. I was concentrating on heavy loads of 2400 with the 172 gr. Keith bullet. Both guns performed up to expectations! I used 10 grains in the 38/44 and 12 grains in the 27.

Haven't fired the Outdoorsman anymore. Been shooting the chopped Mod. 27 with heavy loads of 2400 and the 172 Keith bullet, 358429! Cast and sized another 100 of them today, too.

You're chopped 27 is a cool gun. What do you use to lube the cast bullets with? Is there a lube that doesn't need a press of some sort? I need to cast some bullets for a Martini Rifle at .318 and was hoping to just jiggle them in a can with some lube. Larry

Hi Larry,

Yes you can, it's one of the oldest ways to lube bullets. Pick any lube that you can heat to a liquified state. Stand the bullets on their bases in a shallow pan, then pour in the lube to depth just above the lube groove in the bullets. Once the lube solidifies, use a slightly over expanded case with the case head cut off and 'cookie cut' the bullets out of the lube. Each one will push the preceding bullet up and out of the case.

Lee and Lyman used to make these Kake kutters in different bullet sizers which you can still find on E-bay. But making your own from a cartridge case as described above will work just as well.

Jim's right.
That's the way I lubed bullets when I first started casting, back in the early '60s! Better yet, Lee sells a setup that will lube bullets just like you describe. It comes with a plastic container that you put the bullets in. Then you put in the prescribed amount of their thin bullet lube and shake it all up. The only thing that I would do extra is wipe the excess lube of the bases before it hardens and before you load them. Lots of guys lube that way.

Thank you gentlemen for the answers. Just loaded some 32 HBWC for my new pistol when its done. Andy had the gun for a month and I don't want to be surprised when he calls to pick it up. Hope its done by May 12th for the NE Ohio bunch I have, it will make a good display. WOW, went from 80-85 deg weather in the Caribbean to snow and 30 deg. It only gets worse tomorrow when I go to work. Jim, do you have a basement range? Larry

I wish! Some friends do however. And I'm 15 minutes from the range and we can shoot year 'round here in the Central Valley. I've been known to shoot in my garage for function testing however.

Hi Jim, some where in some of the past discussions I thought you mentioned a basement range. If not too costly, I would consider one in the cellar. I live in a no firearms discharge city but if the local police said OK, it would work out great. I would need some ideas on how to build it. Still talking on down sizing and that would be better. I haven't been out to shoot for several days. I've got quite a bit done in the gunroom the last couple days! I've emptied my Thumler's Tumbler and sized some .41 Magnum brass from it. I've also cast over 150 - 358429 and 150 - 153 gr. RCBS SW. All work that I always put off! Go to the Doc, tomorrow to see what he thinks about my progress. I think it's going to be positive!

Glad you're on the road to recovery. Tomorrow nite I get my C-Pap to sleep with. Did a sleep study 2 weeks ago and I was told that if someone quit breathing 20 times, they put you on the C-Pap they had in the room you sleep in. Well, abt 2 am the door opens and the girl had a hose to hook me up to the machine. Guess I quit breathing, huh? She laughed and hooked me up. I hope that I feel rested when I start using it. I'm always tired. Larry

My wife has a cousin that uses one of those. She say it's helped her rest a lot!

Well, my first nite was not good. I have a beard and the mask didn't seal well. Finally took it off abt 5am to sleep. Trimmed the beard and slept better last nite. The youngest son is an emergency room doctor and he said it'll be abt 2 weeks to get used to it. I feel not so tired today, hope it gets better. Larry

We had 83° here, today! So I took the Outdoorsman out for another test run, today! Before going out I thought I would see if I could do anything for the "too light" trigger. In another post I had read about putting a large pistol primer cup over the end of the mainspring tension screw so it could be tightened more and increase the pressure on the spring, which I thought was supposed to increase the trigger pull? It didn't do any good? I wonder if some one has done an amateur trigger job on it? I don't even know how to tell?

Sounds like someone may have been inside the gun. Hopefully Hondo will chim in to help you. The dream machine is actually a pain in the ***. I only hope to not feel tired on the future. Its getting easier to sleep with it. Larry

I would check the trigger rebound spring (trigger return spring), that almost always gets cut or replaced with a trigger job. It's easy to tell if cut, both ends won't look the same. If not cut, my next step would be to replace it with another standard factory spring. If trigger let off is still too light, a heavier than standard spring. I think one of those should work.

Worst scenario, a trigger or hammer replacement but it should not come to that.
