I am disassembling the frame and slide of my S&W model 539 (the 2nd gen all carbon steel version of the earlier 39-2) for a restoration and hot bluing job. This version of the M-539 uses a short, thick extractor assembly, not the longer, thinner one seen in some later 2nd gen and most 3rd gen guns.
All the typical extractors I've removed from most semi-auto pistols have a small pivot pin that can be driven out with a punch from inside (or the bottom of) the slide. The top of this pivot pin can usually be seen from the top of the slide, just above the extractor body, nestled in a tiny notch, or cut-out, atop the slide. Unfortunately, the short, thick extractor on this M-539 doesn't have a pivot pin visible either from the top or the bottom (the inside) of the slide.
There is a small (spring-loaded?) plunger-like device situated directly behind the extractor body itself, visible from the right side of the slide, but I see no obvious way to disassemble/remove either this spring-loaded plunger or the extractor body itself. I'm obviously missing something since I see no apparent way of removing this type of extractor assembly.
I've already removed the adjustable sight assembly (the sight holder "ears", both springs and plungers) from top of the slide. I can see a tiny hole in the top of the milled slot for the adjustable sight, directly behind the extractor assembly, but I don't see any pins, screws or other devices inside this tiny hole, and I'm not even sure if this is somehow related to the extractor assembly.
A schematic of this particular M-539's extractor/slide assembly would help, but I cannot find one with this version of the extractor. Can anyone tell me how to disassemble this type of extractor?
