Default Front & Rear vs. Front Only Night Sights

Anyone else use front nights sights only? My SD obviously came with only front night sights and I've read several accounts of people who like the front only night sights. I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience with both.

I'd like to upgrade to night sights all around but it'll be an expensive experiment. Part of me says if I can't see my rear sight without night sights, it's too dark to see my target and what's behind it. On the other hand the front night sight I have seem pretty darn handy. Does the rear sight mess with sight aquisition? Does it make a significant difference if they are the same color or different colors? Thanks for any input anyone gives.

having both, I prefer the front night sight only. second to that would be a different colored rear night sight which I have too. In darkness, I pick up the front night sight (with no rears) much better and faster than if I'm trying to sight three glowing dots. for whatever reason, the two rear dots in darkness messes with me finding the front and adds significant time, even though they are slightly different colors. For me, finding the front sight in a plain rear notch is where its at and what I prefer. YMMV.

I also have both and even though I've used Point Shooting methods for years I have a harder time when using a front night sight only gun. I can acquire the sight well enough, I just have a hard time knowing if the barrel is lined up properly. I'm talking about when it's too dark to even make out the outline of the gun.

I seem to do better with night sights where the rear sights are a different color than the front. This combination gives me some indication, in the dark conditions mentioned above, of the front sight's relationship to the rear's.

I also have guns that have night sights that are the same color front & rear and, at times, I've had a hard time differentiating which dot belongs to which sight, i.e. is the front sight dot in the center, or to the right or left of the rear dots.

Because of this I now run Crimson Trace Grips on most of my carry guns and when it's dark out I always make sure to take one equipped with the CT Grips along.

Front only, that's what I need to see at the distances I'm most likely to need them.

I prefer front only, though I can do reasonably well with three dot night sights though I sight with the front dot slightly higher than the two in the rear. At very close range you will still be MOH (Minute Of Human) accurate.

I have three guns with front night sight only and three other with both front and rear. I prefer having both front and rear night sights. I have Trijicon green front and rear on two pistols and Meprolight green front and rear on another. I prefer all green to different colors as I want my sight picture to be as similar as possible night and day. My three guns with front night sights only have XS Big Dot sights and they were not available with rear night sights. They work well but I would have liked rear night on them too.
