Default What To Do??? Bad ratchet On 65-3

Howdy,

I purchased a used 65-3 a while back. I am pleased with everything on the revolver, finish, trigger pull smooth, not any cradle shake to mention. It locks up fine, the timing is good but can be erratic. The hand looks fine. In addition it's a very accurate shooter. The barrel, cylinder are just as new.

The cams on the ratchet are bet-up beyond hope, and it looks like the timing could be non existent at any time. My question is how do I go about replacing the ratchet, if that's even possible.

Any information here would be appreciated as the pistol is too nice other than the ratchet to part out.

Thank You

The extractor (star that has the ratchets) is a fitted part, meaning the ratchets are cut and adjusted for each frame/yoke/cylinder/extractor combination.

Each of the ratchet tips are cut when the extractor is installed in the cylinder, and the cylinder on the yoke, installed in the frame, using a cutting bar/hand. Any additional adjustment that might be required is done by hand, using a special file.

Not something that can be done by someone lacking the tools (and knowledge).

I've only done it in a couple of revolvers, using the tool provided in my revolver armorer class.

Let the company repair it and confirm proper carry up ("timing" if you will).

This is a job for the factory, they have the parts and can do it correctly, at a price that is pretty reasonable. You'll get the gun back in like new (mechanically) condition.

How much would something like this cost? I have a model 10 that's "getting there". And does it vary by model?

The shipping bill will be several times what S&W will charge for the repair.
