Are tools available for the hobbiest to work on forcing cones? - how easy is it?

You'll need the Tee handle and the appropriate caliber and degree forcing cone cutter heads.

Also, a brass lapping head to fit the cutter angle, and some fine valve grinding compound to lap the cone after cutting.

Last, you MUST have the drop-in precision plug gauge to gauge the forcing cone. You CANNOT "eyeball" a cone.
The critical deminsion is the outer mouth of the cone, not the depth or angle.
The gauge measures the mouth and allows you to cut it to the exact diameter.

You should also have some detailed instructions on exactly what to do and precisely how to do it.
Good instructions can be found in the Jerry Kuhnhausen shop manual on the S&W revolvers. Available from Brownell's.
