I missed pics of the crown, and recutting the front of the cylinder, and theres a bunch of steps i didn't photograph, I have 8 hours into cutting and fitting of the barrel blank alone.... I still have to replace the hand and finish mounting the sight rib.

Upon receiving this .32 I completely disassembled and cleaned the whole thing, repaired endshake, and removed the terribly pitted barrel.

Hopefully I'll have Targets to go with this thread by next weekend....

Good luck, looks like you know what you're doin. Have a 17-3 at Andy Horvaths right now being converted to 32 long. Wish I had you're ability to play with S&W's like that. Let us know how it shoots, I'll be following this post. Larry

Thanks guys.. I'm not sure you could say I know what I'm doing, more like know enough to be dangerous. I bought this gun to be a cheap project/experiment, so far the cheap is working out...

Got the hole drilled in the hand to install the pin the spring pushes on (anyone heard of a hand not having the hole???) and got the hand installed. Timing and lockup is now near perfect.

I also got the sight rib installed.....

I still want to put a ball detent in the yolk before I do any shooting..

Any more up dates? Don't want this post to get lost. Cool Project! Can't wait for a range test. Did you shoot it before you started? Larry

Who's sight rib are you using? and with that set up, it cries out for a larger set of grips. Since that is an I frame, that will take some "fitting" also.

Sorry no updates, I didn't get a chance to get into the machine shop this week. Hopefully one night this week ill get back to it.
I didn't shoot before I took it apart because the barrel barely had any visible rifling left....

As for the sight rib its from a 22a, it came off of a barrel a friend of mine had replaced, I just milled the hook off the back where it attached to the original frame.

GRIPS, is a whole other issue, I've been looking around for a set of larger J frame grips to put on it I just haven't found any that struck my fancy yet...

So, I was gettin ready to drill the hole for the Yolk/Crane detent and figured out its way to big. I hit my Snap-On guy up for some balls and springs from a small ratchet and will be installing them instead...

I also did a little shooting, the grips are WAY too small to really control the gun but was gettin 1+1/2" groups @ 25yds anyway. With Hornady 90gr HBWC 1.7gr of Bullseye(should put it right around 700FPS).

The detent, and larger grips should help the groups greatly, but will probably be another week or two till I get it done and out to the range again...

OK, Dreary day here in PA... So with my tiny grips and a not so good rest here at home @ 25yds I shot these first two groups the circled one first, sight adjustment, then the more centered one. Six shots each.

And I thought, man I was gettin much better looking groups the first time I shot it before the detents.... So I put my last five rounds in and held the barrel with my left hand while shooting and got this group. 1 5/8"....

I think with the larger grips I ordered today, and playin with loads some more I'll have a real good shooter. I need to get some inserts for my ransom to really see what it'll do. More pics to come.....

A sort of mini-PPC Gun... I love it!! Back in the day when a lot of K-frame guns were getting bull barrels like that, the best of them had both the ball detent crane lock and had a plunger built into the front of the barrel flat to engage the ejector rod like the original barrel. Some felt that the crane lock was sufficient though. Which route are you taking (since the pictures don't reveal that?)

As for grips, get the biggest pair of J-frame targets you can find that totally enclose the grip frame, then glass bed them in. You can then reshape the outside contour to suit yourself. The old Mustang grips were noted for having the same graceful contours as a plank... a pair of them should provide a good "blank" for you to work from.

Great project. Please keep posting more reports and pictures. You've really piqued my interest, and other folks' as well, I bet.

Regards,
Froggie

Don't be afraid to use Body Putty or similar to build up the grips to fit your hand. My bullseye .22 is a IZH35M, and the grips didn't fit, so I build up a thumb rest, and using "Form-A-Grip", sold originally as a Bow grip material, I literally made a form fit grip. Wasn't pretty , but it sure fits. A little textured spray paint and your hand doesn't move. Perfect grip every time.

Yep,
Got some grips...
And the groups improved quite a bit!!!! But was only shooting at 15yds, I'll post some target pics when I get some shooting at 25yds...

I don't know what you guys think but I love these Pachmyr presentation grips, they just fit the hand SO well...

With his big and BIGGER brother....

I'll get to the custom grips guys, still to many other projects. Thanks for the advice.. :-)

Green Frog, just the crane lock for me, seems like the plunger in the barrel is redundant at that point, plus if your ejector is bent it could actually deter proper cylinder alignment... Although my N has both, and shoots better then I do.

OH,
And its a 1 in 16 twist, it was the only barrel I could find..
So current tally....
Gun=225 shipped
Hand=22 shipped
Barrel=40 shipped
Grips=12 shipped
Sight=FREE (but 40$ new if I had to)
(we won't mention 12+ hours of machining, cleaning, fitting etc.... That was all free)

Still under 300$ :-) ;-)

I'd say this was a successful experiment..
Next time I'll prolly start with a more expensive gun.. LOL

I hope to kick some but at Bullseye this year with this little parts bucket ;-)

I'm in LUV!

Shovelwrench, I understand what you say about the barrel mounted plunger. I'd never thought about it that way as I assume a straight e-rod on any "prepared" gun, but you make a good point there. The lighter cylinder and crane assembly of the small frame also will be a factor. I also like the idea of a full rib to get your adjustable sights, eliminating the need to mill steel from an already small top strap.

Now as for the grips, we have to convince one of the talented grip makers on this forum that "micro-Cokes" would be a great product to add for us users of I- and J-frames. What about it, folks like DCW, H-44, and some of you others who chime in when we start talking about the joys of "going small?" Another possibility would be I-frame sized Roper targets like a couple of guys have showed off here recently. I know I've got an HFT and an RP that would each benefit from a pair, how about the rest of you?

Froggie

"J" cokes would be awesome. To finish off a nice gun with a nice piece of wood. Stovewrentch, you have some nice ppc guns there. I'm drifting from regular Smiths to custom ones. Built a pre-war ppc for the long action. Had the bbl cut to 41/2" so it would look different and weigh less. Its a double action gun for me. Larry

It's been awhile....

Just stopped in to say I stopped building 32L....

I'm building 327 federal now!!!

If I can figure out where to host pics since photobucket turned on us, I'll put some up.

My first conversion was a model 10 heavy barrel. Using A 7.62 by 39 barrel blank to cut a bull barrel from. Making a front post and cylinder catch, installing an adjustable rear sight and drilling and chamber reaming a fitted 22 cylinder!!

I now have a model 10, 6" bull barrel, adjustable sight, pinned and recessed, 327F!!! (need it blued)

My current project is a model 67 that I am boring and reaming the barrel to just under 1/2". I purchased a stainless Walther barrel blank in correct diameter and twist for the 327. I'm turning the blank to press into the old barrel with a step and larger diameter where I'll thread it for the frame.

I'm planning on winding up with a 67 that looks absolutely stock, but is in 327. I'm actually on my third barrel. The first one I didn't feel like drilling and reaming followed the bores centerline sufficiently. I ground pilots onto multiple reamers sizes to maintain the centerline relatively accurately. Second barrel bore was great, but the blank buckled pressing it in. This barrel will be done with the piloted reamers, and a lighter press fit along with retention grade loctite.

Wish me luck!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I thought you guys would find this appropriate for our .32 discussion.

Glad you came back with this thread, hopefully any day Andy will call with the 3” full lug .327 K frame. He reamed the cyl, will fit it in the model 15 frame and cit the 4” bbl to 3”. I will round butt the gun and have it refinished.

Give a step by step on what you are doing, interesting. Larry

I'll be curious to know how your sleeved barrel for the Model 67 works out. As I stated before, both Hamilton Bowen and Andy Horvath refused to talk about using a sleeved barrel for my 327 project because of the high pressure round. OTOH, a Western acquaintance of mine described on the Cast Boolits Forum how he built a Model 64 in 327 by making an inner barrel with an outer shroud made from the original barrel (sort of like some of the current production revolvers.) He didn't do a whole lot of shooting with it before he lost interest and moved on to other things, but I think he had satisfactory results. Please keep us posted with how yours goes.

BTW, my "Project 616" has a Model 617 cylinder and when the chambers were reamed, the recessed rims were also cut in. On my faux Model 16-3 the rear face of the Model 17 cylinder was first milled off so the rims are on the face like the original Model 16s. Which way are you going with your rims?
