Default 2" compensator for Model 500

I LOVE my 4" Model 500. It is the perfect size for me. It is accurate to 50+ yards with 400gr reloads. Ohio requires (understandably) a .357 or larger with a 5" barrel to hunt whitetail during gun season. My Model 66 is only 2-1/2 and is accurate enough for CC, but not much more. I would like to legally take a whitetail with my 500. Where I hunt, 90% of my shots are <40 yards and none over 70. I have taken feral boar with my 500 @ 40 yards.

The Lead-up: My 500 is listed as having a 4" barrel yet 1" of that is made up of the compensator. Barrels are difficult to change. The compensator is simple.

Question #1: Has anyone made a 2" long compensator for the 4" Model 500?

Question #2: Would that count as a 5" barrel?

Thanks!
Shep

These are difficult questions to answer. Every state is differant with their hunting laws. One might say Ok the next No Way. If I ever have this type of question I go ask the person who'll arrest me or cite me. Then we discuss what part of the Hunting Regulations covers it and I look it up. I 'drather ask them then someone who'll say "Yeah your good to go" and then later says "Geee I thought that was ok, sorry bout that". So call your local game warden and get the RIGHT answer.

Very True and a good point Bob. Thank You. But the point is moot if there are no extended compensators out there...

Anybody ever seen/heard/machined something like this?

Default Comp for 500

Not that it is what you are looking for, but I bought a solid comp from another member here.
I really like it as the recoil of the gun bothered me less then what I call the concussive effect.
In other words not nearly as obnoxious at the indoor range.
I do not know if it were made from scratch or perhaps was drilled out from a 460, Smith offered those as a option , I have been told.
Why do you not just buy another gun ?
A John Ross 5" sounds like what you need to me .

Good luck,

Default John Ross

Chris,
That is a good looking gun. I question the comfort level with 725gr of lead coming out no matter how low the velocity, but I have fired a Performance Center wheelgun and they are well balanced.

To your question: My wife can think of one thousand three hundred and ninety five reasons why I don't just get another gun...

if your states law requires a 5" barrel well....thats pretty clear...the BARREL must be 5" not the barrel plus compensator
i hunt boars, rams, etc with my S&W 500 mag.from the performance center...it's the hunter model with a 7.5"barrel plus compensator... very accurate and does well
