Default Help with changing rear sight blade on a model 60.

I have a Pro Series, model 60. It has the 3" barrel. The rear sight is black and the front sight is supposed to be a Trijicon (or how ever you spell it) night sight. It's practically useless as a night sight. Too small, too dim. I have trouble with these sights. I want to change the rear blade to a white outline blade. What do I need in parts and tools?

If I still have trouble seeing the sights, I want to try a green fiber optic front sight. Do they come pre drilled? Is there a certain height?

The front blades do not come predrilled. It's not a difficult job if you have a drill press along with the correct drill bit & punch to remove & reinstall the sight pin. Care must be taken not to enlarge the hole in the sight base for the pin while drilling however.

Kit's and tools for removing and replacing the rear sight blade are available from Midway, Brownells and Smith & Wesson. Both Brownells and Midway have "how to" videos on their website and also probably on YouTube.

I don't know what frame size the model 60 is but I believe K-Frames usually have a .250 tall front sight. S&W does make other heights. The sight won't be pre-drilled.

I want to change a front sight on one of my K-Frames and don't have a drill press but I think I may try to find one somewhere. I may have a little trouble drilling a straight .055 hole (#54 bit).

You ought to be able to drop in the new sight and drill the cross pin hole in it using the sight base holes as guides. I've done this a few times with K-frames.

Might also consider putting a slight "bend" in the new sight pin to make the fit tighter. Loc-Tite, too.

Thin the front sight tab for a tight fit in the base. Install the sight with red Loctite and let it set. Get a #54 drill bit from a machine shop supply store. Fixture the gun where it will not move. Using the holes in the base as a template, carefully drill half way through the sight tab, flip the gun over, and finish drilling from the other side. You can use a portable drill rather than a drill press - just keep the drill perpendicular to the tab. Drilling half way from both sides will eliminate any slight non-perpendicular misalignment. Put red Loctite on the pin before re-inserting it.

The only really specialized tool you will need is an 0.050" cup point pin punch to remove the sight pin. They are available from Brownells, or you can make your own from a standard 1/16" punch.

I found some pretty detailed instructions on changing the rear sight blade, in the sticky FAQ section. From the FAQ and the replies to my questions, I think I've got a handle on what's required to change the blade.

As far as the front sight is concerned, I keep reading about a .050 cup point pin for driving out the sight pin. My revolver has a roll pin. A small roll pin. Any special punch required to drive it out? Can I re-use the pin?

The cup point pin was designed specifically for roll pins.

So long as the roll pin is a tight fit and you use the correct Loc-Tite, there should be no problems with using the roll pin again.
