Default 15-4 sighting-in issue

Made my first trip to the range with a previously unfired 15-4.
The action is rough, and I intend to take it to a gunsmith for a little stoning tomorrow.
A bigger issue is that in order to sight it in at 25 yards, I had to crank the rear sight all the way to the right.
If there are installation problems with either sight or with the barrel, they're not obvious to me.
I had no trouble with two other revolvers, same day, same ammo, so it doesn't seem to be a "pilot error" problem.
Any ideas of possible causes and/or fixes?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
-Mark

Look at the alignment of the barrel compared to the frame.
I've seen several revolvers where the barrel is a little "off".
A couple friends of mine have S&W revolvers like that, and my 586 is off a bit, too.
The one friend had to adjust the rear sight all the way to the left to zero his revolver.
To "fix" it looks like it would require a trip to a gunsmith to address something that's not really a problem, so he just lives with it like that. Even though the barrel is a bit off, you'd have to look for it to notice it.

Just something to check for.

You should check to see that the barrel is installed properly. Sometimes Smith & Wesson, along with other manufacturers, incorrectly installed the barrel. Essentially, the barrel is properly tightened but leaves the front sight out of alignment. Check the alignment of the top of the barrel to the frame and check to see if the front sight is canted off to one side, for example if you have the rear sight cranked off to the left, the front sight would be off in the direction of 11:00. At least it gives you something to check.

Good luck, Steve

Thanks for the reply.
I'll check it with a straightedge. You may be right that it's not really a problem....unless I think about it too much.
