1st of all I am new here and want to say Hi to all. I have 2 questions but they are related so I hope it's OK to post both here.
I have 2 S&W handguns (1 revolver,1pistol) I purchased them new in the mid to late 80's. I have have had problems with both which occurred almost immediateliy. 1 is a 659 autoloader. Right out of the box the magazines would not fit in the gun. It had to be returned to the factory and came back with the magazines fitting but it had a large amount of jamming which seeme to be on after firing eject. It also has a bad feeling trigger pull when it is in the double actions mode. The revolver, a 429, 44mag died after about 1o rounds, The trigger would no longer work the hammer or cylender. It also had to be returned to the factory for repair. It seemed to come back OK. S&W has a lifeime warranty on their guns but I can't recall the year it went into effect. I think 1989, Does any one know for sure?
I also don't know if I can ever feel these guns are reliable and will work when needed. They have both had less than 50 round put through them.
I guess my question is should I send these back for a checkup if they are under warranty or should I get rid of them.
Normally S&W is a well built and reliable gun. I can't figure out why I got 2 bad ones in a row.
The only other info I can give is the 659 is stainless with high capacity magazines. The 44 is nickle plated with a 6 inch barrel.
Neither has been abused.
Any input especially about the warrabty coverage. Also I hate to be without them for a long period of time.
Thanks for you help and advice. Your input is important.

Welcome from Texas Lrfarber. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

I would also suggest range time, but if you are concerned for safety, have a gun smith check them.

Mechanical things being mechanical, can be difficult at times. I would think it is just bad luck.

I would do what Lee has suggested and shoot the hell out of them! If you can fire 250 - 300 hundred rounds through them without a hitch, I would say you are now good to go. IMHO there is NOTHING as good as testing a gun by actually live firing it. I also don't like to take other people's word for something that I would use to defend my life with. Take 'em out and shoot 'em! That will convince you one way or the other.
