ADDING MORE PICS










Picked this guy up on Tuesday and put about 100 rounds through her and had no problems during firing. Took it home, cleaned it and noticed that the barrel was perfect(we all know how anal we are with new toys lol).

took her out yesterday and put about 700-800 rounds through her over a two hour period. Nothing crazy, just hanging out, taking notes on sight adjustments and ammo.

Cleaned her last night after a BBQ and realized my cleaning rod only made it about an inch in before it got stuck...tried to push it through and it wasnt happening at all. Im sorry the pictures dont show the extent of the barrel damage but it is bad the whole way through. you can barely see the rifling anymore, the crown is warped now, its a mess.

Is that leading? I have no clue? Did you try cleaning it with something to remove it?

It's leading, cleaning it will "fix" it. 7-800 rounds of lead bulleted ammunition will leave just about any gun looking like that!

That's some serious leading, and You might just be better off taking that barrel to a gun repair shop for an evaluation and subsequent lead removal.

I had a Walther P22 that did the same thing, the brush on the rod would not go in, I thought I had a bullet break apart and get stuck. It was extreme leading that came clean after some nitro solvent and it destroyed my brush. I don't remember the brand of .22 other than it was not plated bullets.

A gunsmith I know says this is by far the best stuff he's used in years to clean the copper fouling:

Wipe Out Bore Cleaner Foam - Brushless foam gun cleaner dissolves copper, carbon, powder, brass, and bronze.

I actually tried some Blazer bulk ammo yesterday...makes a lot of sense now. I have the barrel soaking in some outers Nitro Solvent Gun Cleaner. I should be getting my bore snake that has some wire brush sections on it in the mail today to scrub this.

Try some of these pot scrubbers. You can get them at WalMart. They are all copper, not copper plated. Cut a small piece and wrap around something you can get through the bore. Works best with Kroil or WD40.

You may want to use a .17 caliber bore brush to wrap the piece of Chore Boy around.

You have what looks like extreme leading, usually caused by a ruogh bore. I would try cleaning it with a bore brush after your soaking and a long seasion of polishing with J.B.
Bore cleaner. Make sure to use a bore guide so you don't ding anything.
J.B. is a paste used by bench rest shooters for extreme cleaning and is actually a polish. I have reclaimed many otherwise good bores. If that doesn't work send it back to S&W.

I had that happen once when I shot a lot of Remington Thunderbolt ammo throgh my gun without allowing the barrel to cool down - it leaded the barrel horribly. In the good lold days you would put mercury in the barrel and plug both ends until the mercury amalgamated with the lead. That was a very hazardous practise since mercury vapors are highly toxic. I removed my leading with a bonze brush and lots of elbow grease. Next time allow the barrel to cool down after firing ca 25 rounds.

Ammo has a lot to due with your problem. I only use quaility rounds. Cheapest is not the way to go.

picked up some copper scrubbing pads and finally formed my own bore snake with it. Getting the job done. Gonna be a while though.

My .22s always lead up if I do not use copper plated bullets and I shoot a lot so that the barrel gets warm. You can clean that with lots of solvent, a brush or bore snake, and lots of elbow grease.

If you are going to do a lot of rapid fire shooting make sure you use copper plated bullets.

I suggest buying copper-plated .22 in bulk with a deal like this. You get an ammo can with it, which is kinda nice:

I always have a .22 caliber bore snake in my shooting bag and on extended shoots drag it thru the bore from time to time. It will prevent this mess in the future.Clean your bore snake in the washing machine from time to time. Works for me.

It would except they don't make a Lewis Lead remover for anything smaller than 9mm/.357.

I find that soaking the bore in Ed's Red or Kroil overnight helps immensely with removing any lead in the barrel. It will work its way under the lead and the lead will remove much easier using any of the methods listed if you do this.

LOL.....a while.

I actually made a bore snake out of the copper pot scrubber. Keeping it too. It works incredibly well. Ran that through a few(about 200) times. Went to see how my .223 cleaning rod would behave ....stuck. grew some balls and used a rubber mallot to pound it through(WORKED AMAZINGLY). After that it was a few(literally) passes with my new hoppes viper bore snake for .22.

Zero problems at the range this afternoon. All is well in the world.

I quit using Blazer .22 due to leading as bad as the OP's. The ammo was accurate, but would leave my MKII and MKIII pistols fouled beyond belief in 300 rounds. Switched to Federal Auto Match and CCI Standard. Now I can clean both pistols with just a few strokes of a nylon brush soaked in Kroil and a few tight fitting patches.

I bought something like 12 boxes for $9.99 ea, prior to Obama's election!

Currently, I still have a few of those Federal 550 round boxes bought around 1992 or '93 from Walmart, and If I recall correctly, I paid only $7.88 per box.
Frequently talking about guns and target shooting with My foot Doctor, He bought a Ruger 22/45 stainless with the heavy barrel back then, and he had a hankering for a Smith model 41.
We used to shoot a couple boxes of those rounds every time We got together, on his property.
Ahhh.......those were some great times!
