Thinking of finding a M28 and turning it into a .44 spl. Anyone been there done that? I have no skills so would be farming out all of the work. What am I getting myself into? Would you make the plunge? Pros/cons?

KB, why not just buy a 24?

Back in 1976, ten years after the .44 Special S&Ws had been dropped from production, I had a M27 converted. A few years ago I lucked into a decent M28 and a 1950 .44 Special Target barrel. I had Alan Harton down in Houston do the conversion. I later sold the M28 and was able to break even.

You would be better off locating a M24-3 or a M624. A lot cheaper way to go in the long run, plus you have a revolver that was built by the factory as a .44 Special.

Like Muley Gil, I did up this one in 1976. It's in .45 Colt however.

Not perfect, but in those bad old days you couldn't get anything like this from S&W.









It shoots reasonably well, but the .357 magnum height front sight blade is all wrong for the .45 Colt (and would be for .44 Spl. too). I needs to be alot taller. Instead, I loaded 200 grain bullets at around 1,000 fps to get the bullets to impact close to the point of aim.

I would suggest that you might be better off financially finding either a Model 24 in one of it's variations or a 624.

Aren't there new 44 specials offered today in the S&W line up of N frames?

I would buy a new S&W M58 and shoot the 41 specials??

IMO the 629 Mountain gun is probably a better investment.
It is stainless like the 624 but shoots Magnums too.

If you want a project why not have a 629 Mountain gun barrel mounted on a long tube 629.
If you dont like SS they did make a blued 44 MG and you can fill the hole with "the Plug".

Did they just discontinue the S&W in 44 special again? I didn't see it on there website. My LGS has a 6" barreled S&W rev. in 44 special in nickel. If this brand new S&W revolver is discontinued again i'' buy it tomorrow.

Yup Kevin. The work was done by Dave Woodruff of Bear, Delaware.

The origional Model 28 barrel was bored and fit with a .452" liner.

Not much to work with is there?
