Default 25-2 Trigger in Single Action - Takeup/Click

Hi guys,

Just acquired a nice 25-2 sight unseen and am generally happy with my Gunbroker purchase. That said, there is amount of "takeup" in the single action trigger pull that is bothering me and I wanted to fish for some opinions here on whether to ignore it or pursue it further...

The double action trigger pull is smooth and just about everything you would want in a S&W revolver. Yeah!.

With the hammer cocked, one can apply pressure on the trigger and get a slight audible "takeup" (may not be proper term) of the trigger - where it will move aft a very small but visible amount, then hit the wall and break cleanly.

It's a pretty light single action pull but I don't have a trigger guage - lets say less than 4lbs for sure...There is a faintly audible click/creak as the trigger takes up. It doesn't prevent operation at all, but it bugs me a bit and I've never felt anything like it on any S&W.

So - my question is - any idea what would cause this? (Other than "somebody messed with the trigger somehow to lighten it. Is this just something routine with an older revolver or is this something a gunsmith can smooth out?

It's not gritty feeling or anything and it doesn't feel like the sear is slipping, but I'm no pistolsmith. And if I do take it to one, I'd like to have an idea of what I should tell him to look at.

Through the magic of the internet - here's a video where you volunteer pistolsmiths can evaluate it! ('ve never tried a link to a photobucket video so I'll post it several times in different forms:

Thanks

Sounds like excess engagement between the trigger and hammer sufaces. Try a little oil on those surfaces and see if it doesn't help. A gunsmith can take that out for you, depending on how badly it bothers you.

I've never run into this myself but since the trigger & hammer mate directly thru the sear contact point (SA mode) it would seem the likely first place to look. You might also check to see if the hammer or trigger has play/wooble in them that's causing that symptom.

I think it's probably normal. I own a fair number of S&Ws and I have
found that although the single action pull is usually pretty crisp they
do vary somewhat. There doesn't seem to be any real difference in
SA pull quality between the common models like the 10 or the guns
with target features like the 25. One of my N frames with the TT & TH
has a slight hitch in it. I don't worry about it.

Trigger creep. Not uncommon and almost always the result of an uneven or burr on the SA trigger bevel. Some shooters like this feature as it is a poor mans two stage but most of the time cleaning up the trigger bevel takes care of it. I don't think adding oil or lube to this engagement area is smart. You want a reliable bevel breaking on a hammer ledge that is literally only .002-.003" deep. Oiling a light trigger can create push offs and give you a false trigger pull.

Just my opinion

Well thanks for the suggestions guys!

I think we've covered the spectrum from:
1. Ignore it - it's a two stage trigger
2. Oil it
3. Don't oil it
4. Take it to a smith to adjust the sear engagement
5. Tighten/or loosen mainspring screw tension

Just like I was thinking I think I'll shoot it awhile more and if it bugs me still, I'll consider having a smith look at it to see if there is a burr.

Appreciate the feedback and help!

Todd
