Default S&W 19-4 missing extractor pins

May I digress for a moment. I picked up a great nickel 19-4,
p&r, exceptional shape, pawn shop find. Took it home, shot 35 rounds, and took it apart to clean.
Noticed both extractor pins were not there. Now the question__ Are there any tips for replacing? It should be a straight forward task. Just tap until flush with frontside of star, right? (Of course placing in padded vice, etc.) Should seat itself correctly, no locktite needed.

I had lost one of the pins on my 27 a few weeks ago while fixing cylinder endshake. I found a number drill of the same diameter and cut the straight shank to the lenght of the remaining pin. If I remember correctly that was .174" long and .054" dia? I then tapped it in after polishing off sharpe edges on top of pin where it enters the extractor star. I didn't use any loctite and mine is staying in just fine. Its a blind hole so you can only tap it in the cylinder so far. If you can just remove the other pin and mic it up. Good luck.

The ones I have in my parts box measure .194 long and .055 in diam. and as Lenny advised, the edge is slightly tapered at each end. If you don't want to take the cylinder apart, the factory recommended installation procedure is to place a couple of empty casings in the cyl, then insert the new pin through the hole in the extractor itself. Using the appropriate sized punch, carefully drive the pin into the hole. Using the extractor as a guide just insures the pin goes into the hole straight and properly aligned with it's resting spot in the extractor.

Thanks, Lenny D. I have four pins coming from S&W that they are sending no charge. What do you use to tap the pins in? Small hammer, or drift punch? I want have to worry about length, S&W are sending me the correct size.

Armorer, didn't type quick enough. Thanks for the advice, that was going to be my approach. I suppose the only real danger is to mushroom the top of the pin. I'll be sure to clean the holes in the star and cylinder before tapping in.
Thanks, Guys. You always come through.
