Default S&W factory stainless finish

I have a S&W 629 no dash and the finish could use a little touching up. No deep scratches or real damage but I would like to bring it back to original if possible not a high polish.
Thanks

pownal55, there have been posts concerning this topic but what I do is get the gray colored 3M Scotch brite pads usually at an automotive body shop or auto parts store. I then use gun oil and rub it gently with the pad until I get the finish that is closest to the original finish. wipe the oil off with a cotton cloth and maybe apply some Renaissance Wax to it after. Don't use much as a little goes a long way. Hope that helps.

pownal55. you hit my next up question right between the eyes!!

I have a 617-4 that the PO was not educated on how to remove a side plate, there is some touch-up needed.

The -4 side plate looks a little smoother than Scotch Brite, even though the barrel looks Scotch Brite finished. It is an old gun, who knows.

I just looked at my 617 no-dash, it looks the same.

I guess I can start there and then work up with finer grit sandpaper, I have gone up to 1200 before on a stainless steel Ruger MKII bolt, that looked like polished chrome, then come back down until I get a match.

Mine will only being removal of a slight side cover burr.

Does that sound correct??

If it is smooth stainless and not matte, depending on how bad the scratches are you can start with 320 grit wet dry and move on up to 400, 600, 800, 1000 soak the paper in water and keep it wet. Use the finest that will get the job done, You can also polish with Mothers Mag Wheel polish or Flitz.
