Default Cylinder not rotating during short stroking the trigger

I'm waiting to pick-up a 29-3 at my dealers shop. I checked it out yesterday and dry fired it to test the timing. I noticed if I short stroked the trigger (didn't let it all the way forward) the hammer would cock and fall, but the cylinder would not rotate. I've short stroked other revolvers, and it usually locks-up the action not allowing the trigger to go back.

I'm assuming by not allowing the trigger to go all the way forward, the hand isn't moving all the way down to engage the rachet on the cylinder?

Is this the case, or is there some other problem going on? I won't have the gun in my possession until next friday, but I wanted to know what to look for when I get it.

Thanks.

I've short stroked S&W revolvers in IDPA more than once just as you describe, which is embarassing but does not indicate a problem with the gun. Let the trigger go all the way forward and it should work fine.

That's how it works and perfectly normal. You need to learn to get your finger off the trigger so it can return (move forward) and not relying on the trigger/rebound spring to PUSH your finger forward.

Thanks.

I've tried to duplicate this with my other revolvers. I've had it work the opposite. Cylinder will rotate, but the hammer won't cock and fall. (Vs. cylinder not rotating and the hammer cocking and falling).

The trigger need to go far enough forward for the hand to pick up the next notch in the ejector star.

Depends on how the parts fit in each gun and how early the trigger is stopped. One more time. IT'S NORMAL. Go shoot the gun, unless you bought it to just sit and play with.

Is short stroking the trigger part of your usual checks on a potential revolver purchase?
