Default S&W 500 firing pin removal

One of my 500s has been misfiring about every dozen cycles.

Takedown and cleaning did not fix the problem then I discovered from watching the firing pin after snapping the hammer, that the firing pin does not come out of the flash hole. Finger pressure or a tap on the hammer will bring it on out. I suspect there is a burr or debris inside the firing pin housing and want to remove it to clean.

So, how is the firing pin removed? I see a side pin to that housing but my attempts so far have not figured it out.

What's the combo?

Thanks!!

GIrine45,

I have the same problem with my 4 inch. I to wish I knew how to take it apart I have done searches nothing on the X-frame as of yet. Can you send me a link of what you found.

Thanks,

BTH

Default info

I found it in a search that gave me S&W 500 Nut's faqs and info that gave instruction on how to remove the firing pin..

Which entails pulling out the retention pin then removing the firing pin and spring.

After I did that and cleaned the whole assembly, finding no problem, and re-assembling the piece, it still failed to push the firing pin through the frame flash hole.

Now I see a drag mark on the right side of the hammer channel. I think the hammer must drag enough there to slow it down and stop it from fully striding the firing pin.

My plan now is to file away enough to let the hammer fall freely. Failing that, I think the hammer will need a shim to keep it from dragging. If that fails, back to Smith it goes.

The problem is the lock!!!

Not firing pin or hammer drag.

It seems the lock is loose and will come up enough to stop the hammer from fully striking the firing pin. The lock can be seen slightly up. Pushing it down allows the hammer to go forward fully.

Now, I have to decide whether to take it out or send it back to S&W.

I certainly will not trust a "lock" revolver anymore.

I had an lock-up issue with a 629 about a year ago and had to send it back. When firing the gun would just seize up and after manipulating the cylinder release and other things it would free up. I wonder now if that was the lock too. Smith never said.

I took the hammer block/flag out and have now cycled the gun hundreds of times.....no hangup or failure to fire or drive firing pin through the flash hole.

I think now that the IL was loose because it was between the "lock" position and total/tight unlock position which allowed the block/flag part to move during recoil.

This may be the classic IL failure situation.

I only own two others with ILs and they are both getting the block/flag removed as they are defense and bear/hog/deer pieces.
