Default Got any woodworkers here? Repairing a grip (stock) cutting a piece of filler?

I have refinished several stocks (grips) Patched small holes and general refinishing. I do other woodworking and have tools.

My question is on a set of K frame grips that are pretty beat up, I can improve them but there is a small chip out of the corner, I always want to try so here it is.

I was thinking of chiseling(carving) a small piece out of the back and forming it to fit. then glue and fill any cracks. This way I would have the same grain of wood.

I have done furniture but never anything this small.

Any tips or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

It's done that way quite often in stock work,,taking a small piece from inside the inletting to make a repair in the same area. Better chance of matching not only the grain but the color of the natural wood and what it'll look like once finish is applied.

Also, get some fine sanding dust from the inside grip and mix it with the glue you use. It will fill in the color in any gaps.

Yes, I have saved my sanding dust. Guess my question is the best way to cut out such a small piece. The wood is to hard for a razor or exacto knife.

If the fill piece is that small, it might be easier to cut a large piece then fit and glue it in place. THEN shape it to the grip. That make any sense? That way you have something to hold on to.

I've filled some pretty large holes with epoxy and sanding dust. Also, Brownells sells a very fine black bone dust for tinting epoxy. It is usually used for bedding stocks. Takes any gloss off the epoxy after it is dry and sanded to shape.
