Default Ever wonder what Evapo Rust does to a blued revolver?

I was curious, so I dunked one. Probably would look better, were the base gun/metal of better quality. This is a loose Spanish copy of an S&W HE. It's marked .38 Colt, but a .357 can drop into the cylinder. The barrel also unscrews and wobbles unless turned a 1/4 turn past where it should be. I'm hoping to find a buy-back program in my area to turn this junk in for destruction and put some money towards something better.

Where can I get some? I have the exact same pistol, without the issues, and would love to find an easy solution to removing the even coating of "patina" it enjoys. It already has no blue, so I can "evapo" all the rust away with no worries!!

Great post.

You can pick up Evapo Rust at some Home Depot and Lowe's locations by the quart for $5.37-$9.29, or Harbor Freight had it by the gallon for $29.99. Most Lowe's and Home Depot locations don't carry it, so you might want to check your local store's inventory online. Be VERY careful if you're going to shoot this model revolver. The steel seems very poor, and it can easily chamber calibers that it never should fire. Do you have any idea who the maker is?

P.S., I dropped a 50lb drill bit that had been sitting outside rusting for 30+ years at my parents' house in Evapo Rust and it came out looking better than this revolver. The revolver was in the Evapo Rust for 12 hours, I think.

Pretty good stuff I think.
It's safe from what I can find out as far as no acids or alkali in it like most every other rust remover around I've ever used.
Most have phosphoric acid in them.

A techy chemist type tried to explain to totally clueless me about how the stuff actually works and lost me in the second sentence of his explanation. Enzymes and something called 'chelation' (sp?). Huh??

I use it and like the stuff very much.
It doesn't do anything to the base steel if you leave it in the stuff a long time. It eats the rust off and then stops working on it.
Safe to dump right down the drain when you;'re done with it too.

I bought it at Home Depot on the recomendation of another 'smith.
