Default model 28 barrel recut to 44?

I have a model 28-2 Highway Patrolman and a model 29- cylinder.
What I want is the slim barrel of the 28 with the 44 cylinder.
I just don't know if the model 28 barrel is big enough to be recut to 44 and still have enough meat to it to be safe.
Anyone know if this has been done?
And by who?

Try contacting Hamilton Bowen and ask him.

I've seen plenty of them bored out for 44 Specials.
So, a magnum bore would fit, assuming the barrel steel and the frame would handle the 44 Magnum pressure.

Why don't you just look around for a M29 Mountain Gun? Unless you want a 6-inch barrel, S&W has already made what you are talking about. If the lock bothers you, you can always remove it. Alternatively, you can have a Mountain Gun barrel installed on an ordinary Model 29.

Since Bill brought up Hamilton Bowen, here is an article by the maestro himself that might interest/entertain you.

On all N-Frame tapered barrels of the same length the outside diameter of the muzzle is the same, regardless of caliber.

Second that. Or look for a Model 24 Barrel.

I'm no gunsmith, but from what I understand, re-boring a barrel is not easy or cheap.

Bowen uses Jim DuBell at Delta Gunshop-Clearwater Reboring to do his bbl re-bore/re-rifling work.

Delta Gun Shop / Clearwater Reboring

You can send it straight to them for the work if nothing else is going to be done on the revolver by Bowen.

Turn around times are not quick.,,6 months+ the last ones I had done.

$150 for a pistol bbl rebore. That did NOT get you a re-crown nor re-throat job. Just a re-bore/re-rifle. That additional work would be done when and by who ever does the conversion of course.
